My daughter stayed back in kindergarten. She continued playing soccer with the team she started with in kindergarten, most of them were a birth year above her so when the birth year change happened they let her play up. She has been playing on the team and doing fine. Well, now the coach has a meeting with my wife and I telling us that he feels next year my daughter should play with her own age group next year and that she should attend tryouts for her birth year. We have a lot of mixed feeling about it because she is a strong player, and the age group below her is mixed with her birth year (2005) and some 2006, so she would be playing with younger players. On her current team, we worry about the entire team going to high school and my daughter being the only one left in 8th grade so she won't have a fall team to play on. Is it better for her to play up or play with her age group and younger? I have seen the younger team and they are nowhere near the level that her current team is at. Or should I just have her go to a different club entirely?

Is she "doing fine" or is she dominating? In theory playing up is supposed to be not just for players who dominate their age appropriate team but players who are say in the top 5 of the older team. Regardless, the coach doesn't want her on the team so message sent. If the age appropriate team isn't sufficient to challenge her then you should look elsewhere. That doesn't mean you end up leaving - things can change between now and next fall. Coaches change, new players coming in, current leave. But over the winter and early spring take her to some practices at other clubs to see where she fits in. Call clubs in your area to ask about coming to practices and ask about their grade mix. A bigger club might have more players caught up in this absurd age change and try to make sure players who are stuck have a place to play when the rest go to HS.

More seriously, playing up is so 90s. New model is to Play Down, dominate BY, Align D with her recruiting class, and get onto team that plays on highest rung of ladder. New Team = New Friends.

Actually, I agree with the state that they have much bigger problems. The OP tells us that his current 12 (?) year old was held back in kindergarten but has been playing up a year since? I am curious as to who she hangs out with....her classmates or her teammates? I would like to think that her parents have emphasized becoming friends with her classmates.
If she hangs out with her classmates then let her play with her classmates. If she hangs out with her teammates then apply to play up realizing that the town might say otherwise.
Does she play club? If so, does she play with her current teammates?
If you were talking about a boy, then I would say he should play his age...for physical reasons. For girls, playing up seems to be less of an issue physically.
What does your daughter want to do?

What level are we talking about? I doubt its top level or they wouldn't have a "combined" team. Sounds like a numbers issue. Find a higher level team and play on age is my advice.
