    22 Youth Players On Team????

I am looking for some feedback on what reasoning is behind this. Why would a youth soccer club place 22 youth players on a roster for one team? Every game someone is upset with limited playing time or required to be there with no playing time. Comparing to other teams 16 players seems to be the norm. I have not seen a competing team yet with 22 players. What positive reasoning would make this worth the tears for kids not playing the game?

4 past 18. Four new players have to sit out every week. The players should let the coach when they want off for homecoming or to go on a college recruiting visit.

My daughter's U17 team has a roster of 24. It sucks. Coach cannot keep track of the players. Lineup is different every game. His sub rotation is terrible. Players are averaging 15 minutes of playing time. No momentum or consistency. Reason? $$$$$ for the club.

My kid's team has 19. So far, I see no benefit of having a large roster unless the player's are all really good. I assume a few will drop off during the year with playing time being limited.

                22 Youth Players On Team????

My kid's team only has 13 players on the team. We play teams with 7 reserves, etc. It is hard during the 2nd half of the game...players are tired. I only wish we had more players on the roster - 3/4 players would be nice. Coach says he is looking for quality (and not quantity). The good part being part of this team, my kid gets playing time & is happy. :)

The club my kid played on last season had many on the roster. It was about the $$$. I was tired of giving the money to support the clubs top DA teams.

What region are these clubs from? We could be talking about 3-4 clubs spread out over all of Florida (Which has hundreds of clubs). Or are we talking about a specific area where this kind of thing is considered business as usual (South Florida, Central Florida, The panhandle, the Gold Coast, etc)?

For older boys teams I can see it for a couple of reasons.

First, at this age you can have multiple players injured at any time.

Second, competition for a spot on the roster and playing time is good. Player that know they will be rostered regardless don't feel the pressure to improve. The players that show up, work hard, and develop will get all the playing time they need.

That only works if the coach is really running the team like that. Unfortunately, most do not.

True most do not our team also 22. Im ok with that except we are trying to be competitive and every week he picks new line up. problem is the team never can settle. I don't care if your rec or competitive you need a starting line up and they are the go to unless they are hurt or sick. all the moving around just puts off the better players because they go to practice work hard then sit when a very bench players starts for no reason other than favoritism or lack of the coach understanding the game. This happens every year at club and DA

My daughter is going through this exact situation. Roster of 24, with several new girls to travel. She is a strong player (objective statement from coaches not me), starter for 4 years, multi-position ability, team leader. Coach is starting other players. When sub'd, her playing time is about 15 mins max. My daughter approached the coach and asked what she was lacking to not get a start or more playing time. Coach said there was nothing to improve. She is one of his best players and admired her ability. He wants to get everyone to play. When she asked him about competing for a position and corresponding playing time, per his previous statements, he told her not to worry about it. And this is not a lone situation. There are multiple players, ex-starters, sitting on the bench with minimal playing time. And just for the curious, the team is getting its azz handed to them in every game. No consistency among the players. No one knows who is where. It's horrible to watch.

As the above poster said, yes, it breeds a poor attitude and discourages continued hard work.

It's about money. Hoarding local talent has a dynamic effect. First, the club gets more revenue, hence, coaches get more $. Also, a larger pool for extra training = more $. Other clubs they're hoarding from have less competitive teams which makes some parents/players want to leave for the better team. Less players for other clubs leads to less $ and higher fees (IE tournaments). Also, coaches at other clubs don't make as much $ and now can be swayed to leave their club and join the hoarding club. The hoarding club can now sway other clubs better coaches to join them. All this is about is MONEY! Who suffers? Everyone, your kids playing time will drop which will drive some parents absolutely batsh** for their first time. Kids will start getting disgruntled and may drop the following year. The other clubs kids will deal with the pain too. Not as much talent on the team. Not as productive as prior years. The one benefit they will get though is a crap ton of playing time. GREED, GREED and some more GREED.
