need a subscription to read the article. Summary, i.e., what are all of his reasons. I can speculate, but why when you can just post them.

It’s tough to find a human being with more zeal for football than Jim Harbaugh. But it’s not the sport the Michigan coach thinks boys should play growing up.

Instead, Harbaugh thinks kids should be on the pitch until they’re old enough for the gridiron.

Harbaugh has encouraged youth to play soccer growing up, as a story in the Wall Street Journal pointed out Monday. Leading up to an AS Roma soccer game in Detroit last month, Harbaugh told reporters that he thinks young athletes should play soccer until eighth grade and then make the switch to his favorite sport.

“I always encourage youngsters in America to play soccer,” Harbaugh said. “Every American boy should play soccer until the eighth grade, then they should play football.”

Harbaugh spent time with AS Roma during Michigan’s trip to Italy in April. The Wolverines used the team’s practice field as the cultures traded lessons about futbol and football.

Yes, and then switch to football at 8th grade. Don't many of our top athletes do this already? Soccer is a sport for little kids in the US. Then they switch to the big boy sports like football, basketball & baseball. The very best athletes usually switch out of soccer before 8th grade though.

So does Harbough never give his reasons?

After watching girls head the ball for the past 10 years so, I'm not surprised....the technique of heading for 90% of them is absolutely horrendous....almost as bad as receding balls out of the air

LAX is the hot sport now; growing like crazy in some parts of the country and colleges are adding programs. Baseball is too slow for todays ADHD society so it's declining, and the concussion risks for football and scaring families away from that sport.

Very few coaches of either gender spend any time teaching heading techniques. Girls also have weaker neck muscles, raising their risk

I would venture to say that most concussion in soccer are not from the ball but from an opponents elbow or head to head contact with an opponent.

That is a lot of it (one of my kids had one from head to head contact) but I read in a study that tracked sports injuries that for girls the actual heading has higher numbers, likely driven by their weaker musculature. But I see boys and girls doing it wrong all the time.

No, baseball and basketball have become year round sports. There is a lot of specialization in those sports for the top athletes. While recreational players play multiple sports most of the top athletes for basketball specialize in that sport around 6th grade and baseball is a sport driven by "baseball daddies" with dreams of success on the diamond who have their kids play baseball in the spring, summer and fall (and winter in warmer climates) at the expense of other sports. Some of the top basketball players may crossover and play some football but that's more because of football's overall popularity and what their peers are playing.
