US Soccer small sided games initiatives

Major changes for the U littles. U10 and below have significant changes including the introduction of a fall back line , changes in offside, and a no punting rule for keepers. No heading rule expanded up to U12. Reductions in games times and a limit on roster sizes.

CJSA is implementing these changes effective with this Fall season. Expect a lot of confusion on the part of coaches, parents and the refs that didn't take the time to get educated on the changes.

The Northeast District of the CJSA has been pursuing small-sided games for ten or more years. Parents and parent-coaches have pushed back all along the way because they want kids playing 11v11 at age 8 and don't understand how kids learn and how the game is best taught. This will be no different. It's like the perennial call by parents for their 8 year old star to play on a U12 team. There's no fixing that kind of stupidity, in part because they know it all and won't listen.

CCSL has been implementing those rules the past two years. Once again, well done CJSA for keeping up with the times.

One person's opinion - The fall back line and no punting for keepers should be instituted for ages up to u16. The idea is to train players to build out of the back, so make sure they do it.

At least through u13. I think that's a great rule.

Why not just put headsets on the children , so you can get them to play exactly the way you want ? That will make sure they do it.

Expect a lot of high pressure and blow outs

U16? Really? I love the rule up to about U11 .... the kids AND THE COACHES should know better by then. If you keeper punts more than 30% of the time after U13 you are on the wrong team and have the wrong coach.

Punting depends on your opponent, correct? If they've got you pinned back in your defensive third quite a bit, then punting can relieve the pressure.

That might work! Good for offsides, out of position, ball-hogging, and unforced turnovers too!

Yup. and if you're on grass in the rain, it might be unwise to possess in your defensive third as much as you might want to in the dry.

No punting should exist up until about U12. By then the lesson is learned and I agree there are times where a long ball is a good idea. We want the outfield players developing but we do have to remember each team does have a couple of keepers, and the ability to launch via a punt or long ball is important for them to learn.

If your keeper can punt the ball 60 yards + i take the instant pressure every time
If your defenders cant handle pressure , i punt the ball
There are no absolutes in sports. And if the rules force you to do only 1thing it is to the advantage of the opposing team
