Declining an offer from a club

What do you tell a club when declining their offer? How much information do you give them?

    I wouldn't tell Fsa anything.

You just simply thank them for the offer and politely decline. You don't owe them any explanation.

Do what they do. Cut off all contact and leave them wondering.

You don't have to, it's all electronic.

Don't burn bridges, the soccer world is a small one.

Agreed. You never know where you might end up in the future.

and more importantly, you don't know where the staff people will end up. That guy you're snarky with today could be the coach of the team you want to be on in 5 years.

Just say thank you for the offer but we'll have to say no, just like you would when declining any sort of good or service. You don't have to give any reasons or go into anything long-winded. They don't care anyway, they're on to the next kid already.

If you get 3 or 4 bids to replace your roof or windoews, do you feel remorse for the ones that did not win? You are the paying customer here, why would you care? Do you think the club cares (whether you accept or they cut a kid)? It's a business and sometimes a competitive team. These things just go with the territory for them and they have done it over and over again year after year (even if it is a new phenomenon for you). Just say no thank you, we decline. If they want more info the choice is up to you to provide it or not. I always think it drives competition when you provide a reasonable explanation as to why another program was a better fit (something for the current club to work on if they care). Whether it be smaller roster, less money, better coach, stronger team ...... whatever the reason may be. It's not a big deal for them as they will find another checkbook to pay them (there are plenty waiting in the wings for that offer ..... and it may be a step up for them). I can't believe you have a conscience for this or would even sweat this one little bit.

Not the OP but I understand it - especially in CT it's a small soccer world. You don't want to burn bridges. Also, if a person (usually the "hiring" coach) has made an effort to answer your questions, let your kid practice with the team etc, it's polite to acknowledge their assistance - but you don't have to go into gory detail either. Mass cattle call tryout where you hardly talked to anyone from the club? No obligation.

Politely decline their offer. I allow my kid to make the decision and we have politely declined offers. We still do summer camps and clinics with the clubs declined to supplement the training though.

Best bet is decline within the time frame requested with a polite thanks for the offer but will not be accepting "at this time." Unless your kid(s) is older and almost finished with this process you don't want to have doors closed in the future. People bounce between organizations so always keep that in mind. If they ask what team, I'd say you can let them know where you went and why. I usually add that we'll see how this year goes and as always we will reassess our situation at the end of the year.
