    Tryout Etiquette

So we all know tryout season is upon us.

Question: What happens if your kid is trying out at two different clubs and the tryout dates are a couple of weeks apart. If you get accepted at Club A, which held the earlier tryout, and they want an answer right away...what do you do?
If accepted at Club A, should you tell club A to wait for your answer until Club B is done with tryouts and you know where you stand with both clubs?

I would imagine someone of you have been in this very situation....how did you handle it?

You're going to let a club bully you?

The answer is simple. If a club really wants your kid, turn the tables on them. Make them wait. If they don't wait, they didn't want your kid that much. You will learn a lot.

thats great advice if your kid is a true stud- if not you will find yourself sans team and end up at some ****show and miserable. if you like the team and coach accept-if not keep looking

OP here. Kid is not a stud, and I think he would prefer to be on Club B (which is holding the later tryout). What do we do if Club A is pressuring for an answer.....?

This is true. So if the kid is a stud, they are likely not showing up at an open tryout for a high level team. If they are a middle roster or lower, they are very interchangeable with the higher end of the team below. Club/coach will go with the bird in the hand.

If child has already had first tryout, you are really in a pinch and will likely have to make a choice. If tryouts have not occurred yet call coach of team B and see if you can get a practice with that team. Then have a conversation to see where coach felt your kid is. If they are a bubble player, take team A

OP: Can I tell Club A (who has offered by kid a position) that my son is also trying out for Club A, and that we want to wait and see how that goes before committing? I would imagine that these clubs deal with this situation all of the time.....

Pretty much. I wouldn't recommend stalling club A unless you're ok with the offer disappearing. Problem is you most likely will have to put down a deposit (you might be able to stall them on this part) and sign a contract. Above advice about getting them to a club B practice right away is very good advice. You can see if it's a real option or it sucks. Always go with the better coaching

Most of the clubs put the squeeze on you for a quick reply - 48 hours from offer. If you don't accept Club A, and you don't make Club B you could be playing Travel Soccer next year. Good luck!

If the A club is a "top club" then they have others waiting in the wings for a spot. You may be able to get out if you handle it nicely and be willing to lose the deposit.

If they are being pushy, accept at Club A - then if Club B comes through (and it's what the kid really wants), just switch off to Club B and tell Club A to go pound thier fist. Whatever you do, don't pay any deposit $ to Club A though, even though they'll push for it.

FSA FC already offered their studs spots.

Delay the orginal as long as you can. Last year we accepted the first offer for my daughter, and then really regretted it. Whether your kid is a stud or not, find some excuse not to sign with anyone until you've looked at all your options. Let me tell you, it's been a hell of a long year with this club (and it's a big club, established).

Overall, I'd say go where your kid feels comfortable and the coaching is good. Many people will tell you the big clubs are the only way to go, and that advice is reasonable as far as stability. But you and your kid have to be happy too. I would stick with Oakwood, FSA, CFC, Sporting and Beachside (I've also heard good things about Ginga, but I don't know about that one). Those clubs have a pretty good product, though they are all different.

And I agree with earlier poster, avoid the tryout cattle call, especially at FSA where a million kids tryout. Get your kid into a few practices, see how the coach runs things. Talk to the parents.

Don't make the same mistake I did. Take your time if you can.

No, they have not. Stop stirring the pot and trying to make anxious parents even crazier.
