    D3 soccer

I'm sorry to interrupt this week's GDA vs ECNL debate but figured that we need some new material.

It's that time of year that we are going to see kids committing to schools. Among them are kids going to D3 schools, particularly the NESCAC schools.

Could anyone share examples of offers that your kids have received from D3 schools. I'm well aware that true atheltic money isn't allowable at the Div III level. I was under the impression that NESCAC schools really only offer true financial aid and not merit money that would be blind to need.

Thanks for anything that you are willing to share

There is no athletic money at D3 and there is no more "commit" than a non-athlete. NESCAC only offers need based $$, as do most of the top D3 liberal arts schools. If your kid is looking to play D3 with merit money try WPI, Union, Hobart, Skidmore, St. Larwerence.

"Commit" for D3 means the coach has you on their radar and has reserved a spot for you on the team. Most programs allow anyone to show up in the middle of August to come out for the team. "Commit" is not the same as D1 with a legal contract with financial considerations, but there is something to it for a D3 prospect.

Not only that, "committing" for the D3 athlete means that the athlete is committing to the coach to play. Of course it's non-binding. The verbal "commit" to D1, D2, and NAIA schools is also non-binding yet everyone always says "commit."

It's hilarious how some people get their panties in a wad over athletes stating that they "commit" to a D3 program. There is a sense of commitment. Not only that, some D3 coaches are more committed to their student-athletes than some of the blowhard D1 coaches that have absolutely no loyalty to their players.

My now college freshman had three solid D3 "offers" (quotes intentional since as we know it's all verbal). One was more of a safety school, the other two she was at the bottom of their acceptance ranges. At all 3 she got between 40-60% off the sticker price. I know from experience with my oldest that kids at the bottom of an admissions pool get very little merit money (if you're well above their average student you will get more money, but at the bottom you might get a small $5k grant), but here my athlete did. Coincidence? One school maybe. All three told me the athletics helped. We never started this adventure with the hopes of anything but we are very grateful - we're in that donut hole where we make too much to qualify for FA but not enough to where paying full boat would hurt a lot.
Unfortunately the two kids missed overlapping which can help with FA - oldest graduated last spring.

Thanks for sharing. Was the 40% to 60% FA or merit money?

Merit - I said we didn't qualify for FA

We are in the same boat right now. My D has heard from 4 colleges so far (two D1 to and two D3). These are not her top choices and are more like safety schools. She is getting at least 50% 4-year academic scholarship from each of them (she would be a great catch for these schools, academically speaking). If she gets into the honors program for one of these, she will get full tuition (we would still be on the hook for room and board). She is still waiting to hear from her top choices which are all much stronger academic schools. I do not expect that she will get as strong offers from those schools but we are hoping that they can get close. All of these schools have soccer programs, but we are looking academically first and foremost. If she can walk on, perhaps she can get any leftover athletic money for this year from the D1s (all low tier D1, but at this point this is doubtful) or pick up 1/4 or 1/3 athletic money as a sophomore if she can make the team.

Walk ons can happen D1 but are pretty rare. Even more rare would be for that player to become a starter and get any athletic money. If the coach wasn't interested in the first place that's not likely to change. Always go for academics and fit first and foremost. Financial concerns will play a more dominant role with some families vs others.

I agree to some extent, but we have seen the schools she is interested in play soccer, and she could have walked onto the field last year and made a difference so if she can get in front of the coach for free on a daily basis (which I agree will be no small feat) then i think she can earn something. She has a good pedigree for soccer but unusual circumstances that are holding her back in the recruiting arena last year (her key year for recruiting).

The question was in relation to NESCAC schools, but thank you for your valuable contribution.

All the more reason to make sure that's the school she wants as the soccer piece is more questionable.
