    Any experience w/Timbers Academy

Can you share your experience with the Academy. Is it true that sometimes even good players do not get a chance to play in games. They sit on the bench. The coaches have pet players?

I would be interested to hear people's opinion about the program. There is not much real feedback out there other than marketing blah blah. I a interested in the boys experience, level of coaching, progression. How many actually get cut? How many progress?

My son tried out as an 8th grader for the U14's. We know some players that did make it and playing time is tough because there are both 2002 and 2003 birth year players and the squad is large. We know some of the coaches and they are pretty good, and the level of competition is great if you get playing time. My son will play high school soccer next year, have a high school social life, and continue to play club soccer. I think that is a better fit for him, but I can see academy being a good fit for other kids.

I know some kids who tried out and it sounded as if politics plays a role. One kid from our team made it to the third cutdown largely because he trains with one of the coaches. I think that most of the kids who made the team were outstanding and deserved it, but I know some kids who got cut early and they are much better than some that made it further, just because they train with a TA coach.

this is a classic example of what i keep telling y'all. you need to be THE BEST. because they already got guys they know (favorites as you say) who can be mediocre. in order to get playing time you have to be better then their favorites. and since they're already ahead of you due to favored status, you really need to be unquestionably THE BEST.

          keep at it.

also, if you've ever denied systemic -isms (of any kind). then Soccer Politics gives you a vague notion of what it's like.

This is so true. Although it isn't solely the domain of the Timbers. This same kid also trains with other coaches so he gets a lot of favoritism (scoff - ODP). We've also had a number of other kids on teams who find out who the coaches will be and then months before tryouts start training with them.

If you honestly think an unknown child has a fair chance, at 6hrs of tryouts, as those kids the coaches and evaluators are familiar with then you are crazy. Sounds to me like these parents are giving their child a better shot at getting noticed. It's called preparing for something you want. They are working on the very skills that they will be evaluated on, and learning how to do it the way that organization wants them to do it.

Coming in new you have to be totally awesome to turn heads and get a chance.

You are all Uber suckers of the soccer pyramid. Most of these kids will do nothing. Nothing with soccer. Nothing. Go get a life and let them live theirs. Psycho nut jobs....

The worst kid on my sons team made it. But hey, he has privates with TH and RM. It is the best way on the team.

Isn't that the truth. Do some private training with those two and you get strong favoritism. We had a kid on our team last year who's dad figured it out and has put his kid on the ODP coaches team and who trains with the two mentioned above. Guess what? He got to like the third cut down for the Timbers and he made the ODP team. In spite of him being about the most ineffective kid on the field ever.

The suckers are the ones buying into the DoCs BS so they can get paid. But the clubs are all the same. Except Pacific, but they are volunteer coaches. 4-H is different. Any others?
