    What makes a good tournament?

I figure everyone's answer will be different but here's mine..

    1. All the games need to be in the same location. I have multiple kids on different teams and if we can just walk to the next game its a big plus, especially when game times overlap.

    2. Enough entries that every level has appropriate competition. My kids are all at different levels so its no fun to either go to a tournament and beat everyone 10-0 or lose 10-0 every game.

    3. Good fields.

    4. Good refs.

    5. Runs on time.

    6. Far enough away that you need a hotel, but not a plane. Part of the fun of tournaments for us is staying with the team and the team building aspect of it. But its expensive, so a plane ride away is over the top to me.

    Games starting on time
Fair refs (need more refs so complaining parents should take a course)
    Good fields
If teams play two games in 1 day, both games should be in the same location
    Clean bathrooms
Hydration available for teams on field (free)
Reasonable food prices or places close by for healthy food choices
Adequate space for teams to warm up (away from parents and other teams)
Tournament organizers need to pay attention, especially THIS year to how teams are bracketed (some U13 teams from the 2015-16 season have had their ranking/points assigned to the 2003 teams and other have their ranking/point assigned to a 2002 team).
Bracket the number of teams correctly
Appropriate max GD to prevent blowouts impacting a team advancing

Fun for who? You are your child?

Same here, I don't see the need for a hotel to increase the attractiveness of a tournament.
There are many other team building activities that can be done and don't include a $500 price tag and running up and down the hotel hallway at 11:00 at night. Team cookouts, laser tag, revs games, etc.

Playing a few competitive games against teams you never see with the roster you regularly have.

            Both.

Just told one of my kids that he is playing in stars cup in a few weeks and the first question was "do we get to stay in a hotel?". Disappointed the answer was no. Hands down his favorite time of tournament weekend is hanging in the hotel pool with teammates.

But thats why I said not everyone's answer will be the same. One size doesn't fit all. We enjoy hanging with some of the other families, the kids have been together so long now that we are all good friends now. But some people probably just find it a financial burden or don't like it for whatever reason.

Oh please, give it a rest! No one said it was the parents but if you spend 3 years with the same families you become used to each other. You must be a lot of fun

                  That was their first question?

Clean bathrooms, real bathrooms are better :)
Bracket the number of teams correctly (VERY important). Been to a few where teams were clearly not in the appropriate bracket. Very simple to look up a teams record. Not fun for anyone.
For me, NO hotel or far travel. There is plenty here in MA/NH. Don't want my whole weekend taken up by 3 (or more) games.

Generally I agree. I don't mind a different location if it's for the 2nd day, but not when it's two spots on the same day.

As for the "fun" of staying at hotels - my kids loved it when they were younger. Now that they're in HS they're kind of over it. They really enjoy their teammates, but weekends away can be a real grind (plus getting school work done). HS in the fall means Labor Day at home for us. We've had some good memories at away tournaments, but that doesn't mean I'll miss it.

Get the thing done in two days. For the love of all that is holy, do NOT have semi/final games on a Monday. There is nothing worse than a 3-day tournament, especially when having to pay for yet another night at a hotel.

Amen brother! So irritating and costly. It would be nice to spend some of the last weekend at home, not fighting traffic on a holiday Monday.
