My Camp Review - Academic 50 ID Camp

There are often posts here asking what the best camps are, or what the experience was at a particular camp. I'd love to get some first person feedback on camps that players are attending this Summer (ID, REsidential and otherwise) so I thought I'd start with some thoughts on the EXACT Sports Florida Boys Academic 50 ID Camp which was last week at Champions Gate (Orlando).

    PROS
    - Good concept in that it includes both field play and mental sessions
    - The mental sessions included a focus on mindfulness and being in the present (i.e. having an attention span) which today's teens sorely lack
    - EXCELLENT access to coaches. They did indeed have 50 coaches there, ranging from D1 to D3 from around the country. Lots of access including a required meet and greet in the beginning after a training session on an "elevator pitch"
    - Very good recruiting session with a panel of coaches for both players and then with parents-only
    - Lots of game play and training sessions done by the college coaches, great opportunity for juniors/seniors to be seen and 9/10th to start the process correctly
    - Good feedback from the coaches, including a required mentoring and evaluation with a coach both verbal AND written
    - nice location. the fields at Champions Gate were first rate and close to Orlando, the airport, and lodging

    CONS
    - the event didn't acclimate well enough to the weather. It was record-breaking heat index. There was water at the field, but they were lucky to not have players suffer heat ailments based on the temp, humidity and the amount of games. Would have been smart to have ice at the field for players to cool off with topically in addition to the water.
    - it was a little pricey for a non-residential camp. $800-$1k. The access to the coaches did give some good ROI, but was still somewhat steep
    - would have been smart to have some cameras on the games so that players could choose to get some film from the games if they wished. Not a complaint just a missed opportunity

Overall I can say I'd do it again based solely on the conversations my son was able to have with coaches and gain the exposure to his game. It seems it will in fact pay off down the road.

Happy to answer any questions, and hopefully others will share their camp experience!

My son really enjoyed USF's residential camp. He definitely wants to do it again.

Daughter just completed Gator Elite Camp for High School age girls at Univ. of Florida.

Extremely well done at many levels. Correct balance of instructional seminars (indoors during the hottest time of the day) and training. Training in the AM, Seminars/Indoor training in the Afternoon and full-sided games in the evening. Excellent numbers: about 45 field players and about 10 GKs so everyone gets playing time but enough subs. They have several Gator players help with the coaching and it helps the girls identify with college players. Daughter's favorite part is that each night they would "hold out" a team of girls to play games against the UoF Women's Team rising Freshman and Sophomores. Very cool for your kid to play full speed against some genuine college players!

      Highly recommend this Camp.

yes, there are many good camps out there, but the cost seems to be rising every year. Some of these fees are bordering on the ridiculous, yet they will continue to rise as we, the sheep, keep paying them. Make some serious jack, and maybe, I repeat....maybe, find a kid or 2. Nice racket these coaches have going!

agreed We went to Adidas 500 last year in Philadelphia area, very well run, great staffing of event by very good Div 1, 2 3 and NAIA colleges. good lectures, even one by current MLS player. practice SAT and ACT, as well as Kaplan tips and online access to help. However yes price very steep, and Not many players get Identified. Call it a hail Mary for some that haven't been seen. If you are a decent player, you will get Div 3 coaches for sure...but those schools are usually pretty expensive and they are non athletic scholarship schools.

Just like with showcases, a player has to work the big camps like these. Mine did the Adidas Philly camp this year (we combined it with a trip to look at several schools). She contacted the coaches from schools of interest beforehand and made the effort to find them and introduce herself. It was a big camp but she said she saw most of the ones watching her that she wanted to. She wants to go to school up north so this was a better way to get some exposure than a more local one.

Mine also wants to play out of state, but it does get expensive with travel + camp costs. Even with showcases this college search thing isn't a cheap endeavor. I've heard of kids doing 6+ camps in a summer!

My daughter attended the UNC College Bound Players Camp, and she loved it. It seems like a perfect combination of games and skills/technical training. Also, the UNC coaches are very involved, and they are definitely looking for talent. A rising soph. received a acholarship offer because of her performance at the camp. My daughter has attended camps at Notre Dame and other colleges, plus region camp, and she ranks UNC as the top camp. FYI Anson Dorrance is a visible presence at the camp; the head coaches are often MIA at other camps.
