England men lose to Iceland at Euro Championship

    Continuity

This Iceland victory is everything that you love to hate in this forum. England are far superior in terms of technical ability. They all play at a much higher level than all, but one, in the Iceland team. Physiologically, England match up in terms of size & strength... but had the clear edge in speed.

Iceland have developed an excellent youth system over the past 20 years or so, as they built turf pitches & moved their game indoor during harsh winters. The current team have been playing together since U16's according to Gylfi Siggur∂sson & the camaraderie & team spirit is 100% their edge in this entire tournament.

Tactically, Lars Lagerback has done very well to organize the group in the 4-4-2. Their game management has been superb, despite breaking down in the 90th minute v. Hungary & allowing Sterling into the area in the early stages yesterday. They Defend as a team & counter with devastating purpose.

Set Pieces win games. Iceland are doing it right. How long until "Soccer the Viking Way" camps start popping up??

England were a mess. The multimillionaires let everyone down. The manager played players out of position, and not one had a good game. For example, Joe Hart is excellent, but struggled in this tournament. Harry Kane is incapable of taking a decent free kick, but was given them over, and over, and over. Sterling has had two abysmal seasons at his club, yet gets to start for England where he does fk all. Rooney has been a joke ever since he got carded out in 2006. Against this hoard of disinterested wankers, my daughter's U16 team would have gotten a result.

Iceland has a population of 330,000 people. Mass has a population of 6.7 million. With 20 times as many people, a MA team playing England would be over in 3 minutes. It's a real achievement for the iceland program.

I love watching the English league, but their National team is a mess. As was said on the radio this morning from Tony Adams, when asked to answer the question: What is the English style they play today? ... He has no answer.

It's true. It's a bag of square pegs, all good players, trying to fit into round holes. English leadership is non-existent. The last English coach who won the league was for Leeds...in 1992. It's just not there today.

As for Iceland, they did the exact opposite of how teams typically react when going ahead. After making it 1-1, and even at 2-1, they kept attacking. Small clubs sit back and pray when grabbing a lead. Not them. Kudos.

Iceland has a many registered soccer players, from youth on up, as Rhode Island.

          Wow.

I think the birth year change is what brought on their success, or was it ODP? DAP? ECNL?

              Ei∂ur Gu∂johnsen -

“The majority of the players in the current national team are… I hesitate to use the phrase, but you could say they’re a golden generation,” he continues. “They’re the first Icelandic players to make the Under-21 European Championship finals. They’ve been together for a long time. They’re also the first generation coming through since Iceland got indoor pitches—they’ve been ready to play abroad younger, and gather that experience. And they also have an experienced manager in Lars Lagarbäck. It’s the combination we’ve been waiting for.”

Eiður thinks the current team has every chance of being the first men’s team to break through into the European Championship finals, and are perhaps paving the way for the future. “I hope that this team has set some role models for the younger generations to come,” he says. “Every boy dreams about playing in a European Championship or a World Cup. Maybe now they’ll realise it doesn’t have to stay a dream.”

England obviously isn't a soccer power any more. I think we need to kick out all of the English coaches from club soccer and start bringing in coaches from Iceland. They obviously know what they are doing

I missed the first 35 minutes but from what I saw, England kept pressing the long ball and playing over the top and it was an abysmal failure.

Rooney was a hot mess, overstepping the ball countless times, set pieces where terrible.

If that's their schtick, fine. Not my philosophy, but if that's what they want...pick a team that plays that way. Then, defend like hell and play that way.

What we had instead were some looking to latch onto long balls, some playing short passes in a circle, some playing long crosses, some playing backward. Ugh....

Long ball football is fine as long as you have players moving into space to receive the pass.
England had zero movement-which got worse the closer the ball got to the 18.
Sturridge and Sterling were total shyte.
                          Absolute rubbish

Most of the english young coaches are clueless over here - they are enthusiastic but not real coaches at all - zero experience in life or coaching
