Any semi pro team in Oregon

I live in Portland. I want to try out for my college team next year. Does anyone know any semi pro or recreation team that play in the summer and I can practice with?

There are no true semi pro teams in PDX. There are, however, glorifies men's teams that think they are semi pro. They are poorly coached except for the Vancouver Victory...they have the only quality coach in the area.

Based on the true definition of Semi-Pro
A semi-professional athlete is one for whom sport is not a full-time occupation. They are not amateur because they receive regular payment from their team, but at a much lower rate than a full-time professional athlete. As a result, players may have (or seek) a second full-time job.:

            *NWSL Portland Thorns

and any Player on the *T2 squad and a handful on the players on the MLS Timbers.

All the remaining adult soccer teams in the PDX/Vancouver area are strictly Amateur teams that might cover some car travel/gas, maybe lodging and sometimes per diem's.

All of the players on these amateur have a full time job and play for the love of the game.

probably true. teams in OPSL are run by just a team manager, but almost always composed of ex-college and/or ex-professional players. so, starting there will definitely prepare you for college tryouts. good luck making a team though. season started a while ago, and as with the rest of futbol, it is cliqueish/all about politics.

http://www.opsl.org/home.php (you'll notice some "famous" names on the scoring leader chart)

http://www.nationalpremiersoccerleag...2906+L2/+E+102 (despite what they think, not actually better than OPSL. though i tried to get OPSL to join this league more than a handful of years ago.)

(possibly better than OPSL, haven't seen much because they're newish. but if you think Aaron Lewis is a good coach. just LOL.)

                +1

Chad Barret, Scot Thompson, Lee Morrison, Byron Alvarez are all pros who played some time in the OPSL. Some excellent amateurs as well. Both Westside and Eastside played their national championship boys' teams against OPSL opponents as prep for regionals/nationals.

A boys team, no matter how talented, ought to get beaten by a team of grown men in their physical prime who know how to play the game. The point of such (mis)matches is not to win; but to prepare against the more difficult opponents one will find at regionals and nationals.

yes, their eyes were opened to the fact that they aren't the greatest #squad ever, so better keep at it, if they want to win nationals. i think it was very fundamental to their development.

In the pre-MLS academies days, we called that development. Wasn't perfect, but Oregon did alright with that approach.

My men's open D1 team just played a U17 Westside team in indoor, who we beat because we are stronger and a bit more intelligent with our play. However, good for them to come and play in our league...it's great training for them and they will benefit from it.

                            Worth a look

These same youth all-star teams demonstrated they had developed and eventually figured out how to beat the high level Amateur Men's team's at the Oregon Classic tournament in 2009 & 2010, development worked differently back then. Kids took their licks and then got to a point were they figured out how to beat the men.
