It really illuminates the main issue we have in this country in regards to youth soccer, which is the pay to play system that automatically eliminates at least 50% of the potential talent (a conservative estimate IMHO) by pricing them out of good coaching and technical development at young ages, continuing on through the academy systems and even into the our own professional league.

It really is expensive. Probably $200 per month for regular competitive soccer plus you have to find free time to transport to practices and games.
For a lot of people this is not doable.
There aren't many costs that can be cut if you want to do it right. Player card fees could be slashed. League fees create large profits and could be slashed. But that's about it. Club salaries aren't excessive from what I can tell.
Scholarship programs vary and in some cases help quite a lot.

Soccer does not get the athletes on the men's side. Take a look at press coverage on football and basketball vs. soccer. If you are a stud athlete which sport would you pick.

I'm talking about U11 and younger. The travel and expense for 5th graders is just silly. It just keeps getting younger and younger. Most clubs have good scholarship programs for fees and uniforms. But the time commitment and travel is steering people away.
