    Wow!

    Great article, thanks for sharing!

It really illuminates the main issue we have in this country in regards to youth soccer, which is the pay to play system that automatically eliminates at least 50% of the potential talent (a conservative estimate IMHO) by pricing them out of good coaching and technical development at young ages, continuing on through the academy systems and even into the our own professional league.

It really is expensive. Probably $200 per month for regular competitive soccer plus you have to find free time to transport to practices and games.

For a lot of people this is not doable.

There aren't many costs that can be cut if you want to do it right. Player card fees could be slashed. League fees create large profits and could be slashed. But that's about it. Club salaries aren't excessive from what I can tell.

Scholarship programs vary and in some cases help quite a lot.

ECNL is $1000/month. Only players with rich parents play so a large talent base is left out.

This article is about men's soccer.

Soccer does not get the athletes on the men's side. Take a look at press coverage on football and basketball vs. soccer. If you are a stud athlete which sport would you pick.

There are lots of rich parents in Oregon.

Not really. Most of the talent never sees ECNL due to cost.

oh God, another round of over-inflated statement of expense. U15 is like $600/yr more than regular club fees, plus travel. If you're playing on a competitive club team, you're traveling anyway so there really isn't that much of a difference!!

Not really. Most top talents also have the money, or can get the money

The VERY top talent can get the money. The rest have to pay. There's a large population of players that would make the team that chose not to due to the cost. I totally understand that the largest part of the cost is travel, but it's still cost.

Thank you for detailing the high cost for us. Always good to use data. When you factor in travel, especially if any family actually wants to watch, it's about $1000/month. Thanks again.

I'm not an ECNL hater. I do think competitive soccer is getting out of control at the younger ages and it's beginning to lose players. I'm talking about U11 and younger. The travel and expense for 5th graders is just silly. It just keeps getting younger and younger. Most clubs have good scholarship programs for fees and uniforms. But the time commitment and travel is steering people away.

And while most clubs offer some scholarships, it's really only for a small percentage of people. If you are middle class, you do not qualify.

This statement is so short sighted and completely off base. You really think most top talent have money? That's utter nonsense.
