Looks like the basically the same kids as last year. Portland area 2002s are all together so big pool but smaller and stronger than all of last year's individual groups taken separately. Salem has its own pool now, which is small but strong. Eugene can keep more kids now but much weaker overall having lost the Salem kids. The RTC level is basically for most of the kids and no real surprises. Some strong players across state don't do it at all. The kids who are doing it should enjoy it and have fun. No harm to the kids who aren't doing it. They'll have fun at bball or whatever they're doing instead. The best players rise to the top no matter what they do. Cheers to all.

Basically, yes. For the younger kids - Pre-ODP, if you will. It's a way to get more money and get kids identified earlier in order to keep those athletes in soccer. I know two 11 year olds who quit all other sports because they made it to the State/Regional group of RTC. My kid is Olympic bound in soccer, baby!!!!! USWNT, here we come!! Its just so easy to open parents' wallets if you tell them their kid is "elite"! You get all of their money and...maybe one of the thousands will actually end up on the Olympic team.

Looking at 2002 girls north list, it's pretty clear they took checks from everyone that showed up. Rec players included.

Or maybe they just like soccer more. Hard to imagine not loving the standard bball parent coach that yells all the time and has a limited sports IQ.

That's the same all over. RTC is the bottom of the pyramid. It's just extra training for everyone at this point.

I thought I had heard about 80 kids showed up for the 2002 Portland tryout, that's not 80 kids on the roster.

RTC is the entry point to ODP.
everyone gets accepted to RTC. Coaches and staff get to know your kid. Then in later years when they try out for ODP or Academy, the coaches already know them and they "go to the head of the line" for selection.
Very rarely will coaches select someone for Academy if they did not start in RTC and go through ODP.
We found the extra touches to be fun, and made it so much easier to keep going with ODP.

Maybe everyone ( or close to it) gets in at the 04/05 age but it seems to get tighter in the older ages. The Portland 02B had 75 plus kids at the 2 tryouts that I was at, so I seriously doubt that they take everyone, that would be a pretty large group. I would think there will be some cuts due to numbers and the fact that there were some pretty mediocre players there.

Any idea on when this list gets posted?

In the past (the better days in my opinion), they had 6 RTC's. The RTC's had enough numbers that they could do that, even make a few cuts up front. By the time the Eugene tourney rolled around, each RTC would cut it to 18ish, the final roster. From there, they would pick a State ODP pool from the Eugene tourney. That would typically be in the 30-40 range, closer to 40. This would allow them to train and compete for an A and B team through Friendship cup, also pushing and competing for a spot at Regional Camp. For regional camp, they would typically take the top 18 from that state pool. Regional camp was kind of fun because Oregon could compete as a state at times, and then mix together with the other states at times. From regional camp, there would typically be around 3-10 holdovers, making it to the regional pool. From the regional pool, you might see 1-4 kids actually make the region 4 team.

I think things have shifted over the years, in part, because not enough kids show up at each of the 6 RTC's to have the quality. So they have had to go to combining certain RTC's or maybe now they are just combining them all into one pool as you mention for the 02 boys. But I think people have assessed the program, and have opted out for various reasons. I am not slamming the program, it has merit for some. But with less people, the RTC's sort of lose their purpose. In that case, just starting with one larger pool and whittling it down to a state pool makes sense. By the way, I personally wish that they didn't switch regional camp to mixing everyone up. I think it was fun and productive to see the states compete. It's still pretty obvious who the best players are for holdovers.

numbers in the Couv' were pretty good.

                              107 boys
                              97 girls

even with the turf being built next to the shooting range
