"When Did Youth Sports Become Bad?"

In today's Palm Beach Post Accent Section:

Not only is there NO correlation between preteen sports specialization (year round sport aka travel team) and later reaching elite status, but the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center says that sports specialization before high school puts young athletes at risk for, "A loss of of transferable athletic skills, over-use and other stress related injuries, higher anxiety levels, difficulty coping with failure, and burn-out!"

    Ok. Keep playing rec then

You are not going to come to a specific sport talk forum and convince people here that they should run to other sports.

The article goes on to state that the highest risk for burnout occurs in programs where none of the boys teams get out of the "rec soccer" round of State Cup, for example, Clearwater.

In response to the question in your title, who has said that sports are bad? Even the US Youth Soccer Development Model has soccer being a late specialization sport, advocates that children 6 through 12 years of age should take opportunities to play in different sports and a multi-sport experience will provide a solid base for long-term development as a soccer player.

Nobody is suggesting anyone "run" to other sports. They're saying your kid is better off if he/she is well-rounded.

Just because The USYS Deveopment Model advocates it doesn't mean parents follow through.
