    What's wrong with Rec Soccer?

After reading these posts for a long time, I sense there is a low opinion of REC soccer. Yet I see people constantly complain about the high cost of kid's soccer and the low probability of getting a scholarship. Isn't REC a better alternative than getting fleeced?

I expect the trend will be for club's rec programs to be more like the competitive teams we see today. Kids and families want to get the development and competition closer to home without spending the time and money traveling far away. Heck Rec players could train locally at a good Rec club program and be able to afford a private trainer and end up on a top time when ready to travel hard.

If you want the best of both worlds, Rec soccer and high fees, you can always go to Celtic.

With the trend being clubs partnering in geographic areas, the rec programs at the bigger clubs will be closer to the competitive teams at some of the smaller clubs. Especially the big clubs who are putting their resources and efforts into their recreational base.

How many soccer clubs are there that have both Rec and Travel? Are they rec programs with Travel offshoots or competitive clubs who expanded into Rec? And how large is each program? It would seem like you need a LOT of kids to have a rec program with more than a few teams in each division.

Wasn't Weston at one time partnered with the AYSO Rec program or something to that effect? That must have provided a huge feeder base (and still probably does just due to proximity even if there is no longer a partnership).

Delray does have a good rec program, but if you want the best of both worlds go to Boynton. They have some of their travel teams (Knights) playing in their rec program.

I am jealous. I wanted to pay $1100 for my kid to play rec!

Lakeland FC has both Competitive and Rec program. There are roughly 2000 players in the rec program. It is a decent program for the younger ages (U5 - U12). The main problem with rec as an option for a player with decent potential is that the majority of the coaches are dads with little to no experience with soccer. If they do have some experience, not many have had any coaches training or licensing.

Well I have said it on this site a few times. there should be only 1 travel team per age group at each club. everyone else should be in rec and pay rec prices. $1200 for the B team is ridiculous. both of my kids got coaches last season who were inexperienced as coaches. one was a dad and the other a player. we paid $200 less than the top team at the club for far less coaching. this year, they will play rec. couldn't justify the expense anymore. we went from paying $1200 for team and club fees in 2013/14 to over $2K in 2014/15. And this was on B teams.
