    Multi-sport

How many of your kids play multiple sports, and how do they deal with soccer as a part of that. There's plenty of evidence that multi-sport play makes better all-around athletes, but the club soccer mentality doesn't support it (making money is priority #1).

Any thoughts on how to play competitive soccer as well as other sports (basketball, track, or lacrosse)?

Just do it. That may mean you're running to games/practices most nights of the week during overlap seasons. Most athletic and competitive kids enjoy having an opportunity to play every week. Not all kids want to play traditional sports during traditional seasons. I see the current system as filling the demand for kids who want to play soccer more than just the 3-4 month fall season.

My dd kicks @ss at soccer, but was absolutely awful as a qb in powderpuff football.

We wanted out dd to be multi sport, and she was for quite a while but once HS came along, SHE was the one that dropped the other activities. She thought it was too difficult to do soccer along with the other things. She wanted to fucus on soccer.

Too many (girls) get injured in basketball. It seems to put many of the same stresses on joints, ligaments, etc. as soccer. Not long ago, most star college players also did track. I highly recommend it if it is just running events. Lacrosse too similar to soccer, probably avoid it.

That's strange. Our orthopedic surgeon encouraged our girls to play basketball along with soccer. He said they are good complimentary sports.

An ortho and two PTs told me the same thing. Kids that do basketball and soccer tend to avoid injuries.

That's what my friend told me right before her daughter tore her acl in BB. It's too hard on the knees. So is soccer, but BB is worse.

My neighbor's kid got hurt in a car wreck with her seatbelt on & her mom said it happens all the time & her kid wouldn't have been hurt if she wasn't wearing that darn seatbelt. I don't want my kids to wear seatbelts anymore. Just too dangerous.

It depends on what the kid wants to do. My soccer players all played multi sports with the one who plays D1 now being a multi sport super star. It was important to her and she did miss a practice or two and maybe even some tournaments. There were parents that got ticked off but hey it is her life not theirs.

And, to all those parents that want to start complaining about commitment, my thought is that my kid lets you down when she doesn't show up and your kid lets everyone down even when they are there... and they are always there.

It is about your kid and what is good for your family ... nothing else.

I've heard this from a lot of physical doctors.

The surgeon is quite wrong. Basketball and soccer put tremendous strain on the knees and ankles particularly. My DD's sports orthopedic surgeon feels quite the opposite. My DD can list over a dozen persons she played with that played soccer and while not being injured playing soccer, they did injure themselves playing basketball. Running track helps muscles develop to compliment soccer. Two players on her college soccer team that played im basketball injured themselves during basketball.

But, everyone is going to do what they do. I would find a new orthopod.

In hs we saw many girls injured from both soccer and basket ball. Let your kid do what they want but don't say that they complement each other. Both are hard on the knees. I wish we had taken more time to go on vacation as a family and spent more time biking and swimming and relaxing from soccer. When you do multi sports, (we did hs soccer, club soccer, track +more, with multiple kids) we never got breaks, especially with one in hs and one in ms. The seasons overlap. Enjoy while you can, but take time off to spend with your family too is my advice. We have no regrets, but we would do things differently for sure.
