Who is going to pay for the coaching and the facilities if not the parents? We certainly don't need the government getting involved and raising taxes even more, do we? And if you want to see the level of soccer plummet and costs quadruple, make it a government program.

This is true, but as currently ran by private firms aren't we getting ripped off? and who's there to stop the continued ballooning cost?

The consumer determines this. If you think you are getting ripped off, find another club or another level to participate at. Or start your own club. I think you'll find that the model of free soccer with unpaid rec coaches won't get you very far. Consumers demand licensed experienced coaches. They demand top quality facilities. They demand clubs have policies and procedures in place to safeguard the kids and reduce liability. All of these things come at a cost.

As someone who consults to big government I can assure you that no good will come of regulation. We need smaller government not bigger. Talk about a rip off. The best way to make an impact is to vote with your dollars or lack thereof.

you do realize that as parents we are paying about $5/hour for coaching?

you do realize that most coaches break even or pay to coach teams?

Please come up with a better model, I'm all ears.

In Europe where each club makes $1-2 Billion per year they have a budget for their youth programs. Not to mention that soccer is the main sport in their countries.

At the basic club level I think we're doing the best we can with the choices we have to work with. Coaches have to be paid, or you won't get the ones who know what they are doing, refs need to be paid, fields need maintained, ect, there are scholarships for those who truly can't afford club dues.

Where I have seen there could be some other sort of set up is ODP where it seemed like some choices were made based off who could pay and how much they could pay (how far they went ie state pool, regionals) not all the kids but some. Possibly there should be other ways of identifying kids for national level. Because kids are slipping thru those cracks. But big government isn't the solution. Ever. For anything.

Programs like ODP need to be much more selective and free or very low cost (funded by US Soccer) for those that are selected. Right now the program is just a cash cow for the Timbers, nothing more.

I agree, but if you look at the context of this thread, how is ODP in other states? How are national team players getting identified? That's is where the issue is, if we are talking about the pay to play model isn't getting the national level teams the top players in the nation.

So it's not all an issue of the timbers raking in the dough from odp.

Someone has to fund it. When my older daughter first started ODP it was relatively inexpensive and was very rewarding. In her case she made it to national pool once and national camps and was always on the regional team. In Oregon, after OPL started their league they did not contribute the $3 per player that had previously subsidized ODP making it cost effective. That was when ODP became cost prohibitive and nothing has filled the gap.
