There were whispers that this might happen. Tryouts are around the corner. If a child makes a team and then a merger happens after he/she accepts his/her placement will that void the contract and allow him/her to leave for another club?

I doubt the merger will happen after try-outs. I would assume it will happen if it does by the end of next week.

Is this going to be one of those cluster-you-know-whats that gets announced 2 days before tryouts?
"We can't tell you who your coach will be yet because we're completing a merger."

Very soon, within days, we anticipate that FC Bolts be completing a merge with Scorpions/Breakers. The Boards of both clubs have voted unanimously to create 'FC Boston'. Boys teams will be known as 'Bolts', Girls teams will be known as 'Boston Breakers Academy'.
The merge will give both clubs more geography, will improve the size and strength of both boys and girls programs. It will give the former Bolts girls access to NPL and ECNL and will give the former Scorpions boys access to the US Development Academy and the Pre-Academy. FC Boston will have more visibility and recognition than the clubs had previously. There will be synergy and economies of scale. Very few clubs, none closer than PDA in New Jersey, have access to both the ECNL and US Soccer Boys Development Academy.
Many people were aware of the discussions but since it was not fully completed no announcement had been made. We didn't want families left in the dark any longer, hence this 'pre-announcement'. When the merge agreement is signed we will make a more formal announcement.
