    Best High Schools

We are a bit early for HS Soccer threads, but there has been much discussion about soccer scholarships. I think we all know that academics are more important to athletics and academics can put as much or more in the bank for tuition than athletics.

So with that, here is the list of the best high schools. You can look at Oregon or Washington and see how you HS stacks up. Although you might be disappointed.

Too bad the list does not include private schools in Oregon.

The 'O' did a piece last year on private H.S.'s They referred to a service Niche.com that ranks both public and private (separately). For private schools they ranked Oregon Episcopal School 1st in Oregon; Catlin 2nd; and on. The interesting point was they gave O.E.S. a national ranking of 13th. No other school in Oregon was in the top 100.

Here's the link, click on oregon for the state list of private schools, etc.

Well it's probably more based on academics and academic outcomes, then sports.

If you take the time to read the lists for state and Portland metro, they are not consistent. A school ranked third in the Metro area is ranked eighth in the state, but a another school ranks below in the Metro area and higher in the state. Not a correct conclusion. But, if it gives someone some solace, no problem.

At the end of the day, unless your kid is in the Portland school district or in one of the dirt poor rural districts, they will get as good an academic experience at any high school, public or private. The benefit that private schools provide is the "networking" with other wealthy kids that comes in quite handy later in life.

A lot of that rides on the kids and their parents. There are tons of opportunities to excel at public schools if they are taken. There are a number of those private schools on that list, that have less to do with stellar academics and more to do with learn'in 'bout Jeezbus. Although the top schools on both the private and public lists are very good schools. My dd will be in H.S. in 2 years, so we have been 'shopping' the H.S. scene and the teachers, facilities, curriculum, expectancies, academic outcomes, etc. at the top two private schools is head and shoulders above anything else, public or private. You pay for it though. Just depends on how you opt to pay for it. If you kid goes to L.O. you pay for it through overpriced housing and high prop. taxes. But there, you get an interest deduction and possibly some appreciation. Not as good networking though.

First, the higher ranked schools are actually better. It's based on actual criteria, not opinion. But if it makes you feel better about your school not being ranked, then so be it.

Second, regarding private schools, I do think they provide more benefit than networking. I'm no fan of private schools, but I do think they provide a lot more than meeting other rich kids.

I chewed on it and then spit it out in disgust. Gee, if the standard of living weren't so high for being homeless, maybe there would be a bit more incentive to graduate. And if meth and other drug usage wasn't so high, maybe they would learn something while in school. Our state government has made it too attractive and easy to stop working hard and take the easy way. Well done Oregon. Legalizing marijuana should really help these numbers too. The revenue from the sale of it can be used to build more bike paths.

Then step up and be a better parent. Too bad your kid dropped out of HS before graduating. Pathetic. Even mentally challenged kids can graduate from the Beaverton High Schools.

                            True.

Not like Portland schools where everyone just drops out to make the big coin stripping and serving big macs.
