I would imagine it has to do with globalizing his brand because he's pretty much won everything a footballer could in Europe. He's won virtually every significant trophy and broken plenty of records along the way.
Ronaldo will probably sign for either some LA/NYC/Miami team and will most likely get 100% rights to his images and receive a percentage of jersey sales with his name just like Beckham agreed to when he signed for LA Galaxy.
He will be 33 and he's receiving around 18 million with Real Madrid. I would assume he's going to be a world class footballer by the time his contact is up with Madrid. MLS teams would probably have to fork over a TON of money for him but it would be definitely worth in the long run and how much exposure the MLS would get from it.
