Was chuckling a bit as I read it - last year we had European relative visiting who was eager to learn more about US football. Not only was he baffled by the amount of rules but was astounded by how long it took to complete a game (and how little actual action there was). He definitely was not converted into a fan.
The author does make some interesting points. Thanks for sharing it was a fun read.
The agree 100% with many of his points. His point about American football only having 11 minutes of playing time was so true and probably the reason why I don't really watch most American football games besides big playoff games and the Super Bowl. I distinctly remember going to a Patriots vs Dolphins game and there was so much standing around and so many breaks in between plays. It didn't help that it was a blowout game and the atmosphere was just not enjoyable.

What I have done for the last few years is watch Red Zone at 1:00 while I DVR the Pats.
What saves American Football are gambling/office pools and the Fantasy leagues

Does anyone actually LIKE American football? Like watching it I mean. Take away all the booze and all the ridiculous fans, it's pretty much a game of getting a ball inside a large rectangle filled with thousands of rules that don't even make sense.

Aside from the fact that there appears to be a foul/flag on virtually every play in American football, the rules all seem to try to stop the team from achieving their one goal: getting a touchdown. Pretty American if you ask me haha
The point about American sports rewarding losing teams is so spot on. In Europe, the losing teams are relegated to a lower league and winning teams are either put into the Champions League or promoted to a higher league. Furthermore, in America losing teams are actually given Draft picks to reward them even more.
Good article and really shows the how American pro sports support socialism.

I like watching football. Although I'll admit sometimes it does get a little boring with all the breaks in play but it's nice to see a nice hard tackle once in a while. I like European football and American football equally.

The one thing I do hate about American football is the flow of the game, or lack thereof. There's no fluidity to a game. Most team sports, for example basketball, soccer or hockey, seem to have that constant flow of pace which is really smooth to watch as a spectator.

If you ever go to a game, you realize all the down time.
After a score, the play is reviewed to make sure it was, in fact, a touchdown.

Same here. Just as it starts getting exciting then there's play stoppage for some reason, then a timeout, then a commercial break, and once they start back up again you've lost interest. And it's pretty much a 3 1/2 hour time commitment start to finish. What I really don't get are the guys who watch it all weekend long, every season weekend. Don't get me wrong I enjoy rooting for the Pats and watching a good game. But all day long? That's time you can't ever get back.
