Thorns Academy $8000 / Year? Really??

$8000 per year? Really? To play FWRL and OYSA? What a rip off. Can't believe people actually think this isn't a huge income stream for the Timbers.

Horrible coaching, horrible leagues, very low level tournaments, and still $8000 per YEAR!!!

Not sure where you got that from:
What is the cost of the Thorns Academy season?
For the nine-month program which includes training, leagues, tournaments, gear, etc., players
will have a $1,250 state fee that will cover a list of items included below. Travel costs will be
on a per-event basis and there is no question the value of this program will be greater than
any girls program we have ever seen in Oregon and the affordability was always priority
number one for our players. Payment plans, camp working opportunities and scholarships
will also be available for all players.
      Fee Structure
      Academy State Fee: $1,250
(Covers coaching fees, fields, league entry, uniform, Thorns FC Sport Science,
Sports Psychology, access to Thorns first-team staff, 3 training sessions per
week, athletic trainer, access to first-team players.)
Travel Costs: (Cost is based on per-event basis; If a player played in every
event, they would pay no more than $3,600 for the season.)
      (Covers flights, hotel, transportation, etc.)

Ah the scheming minds of OPL have come up with their latest gambit. Try to throw the same claims made about ECNL back at thorns...turnabout is fair play, yet the argument seems unbelievably artificial when it is made in response to the same argument going the other way...Best advice - listen to only half of what is posted on here, and only believe about half of that.

Besides the Far West Reigionals, everyone one of those events are where almost all of the HS A teams from OPL are already going.

I love how they put down Surf Cup, they haven't even put out a list of accepted teams yet. Do they think just because their using the Thorns name that Surf Cup is going to accept them.

I know that our THUSC team is going to just about everyone of those, including Surf.

Pac NW College Showcase is crap. Looks like an OYSA mini tournament.
Las Vegas Showcase - Who from Oregon isn't going to this???
                      FWR - OYSA
Tacoma Showcase - don't know the teams yet but it should be an OK tournament
FWR - OYSA if you qualify, which shouldn't be that difficult (looking at the rest of the comp)
Surf Cup - I think every NPL team in OPL is going this year.

Your team sounds like a good option for the current ECNL players who will get displaced next year when better players come along and take their spots.

Except that PacNW Showcase is really just the last 3 games of FWRL against mediocre teams, there is no Far West Regional weekend in Boise for this age group, the Thorns have yet to qualify for Far West Regionals, and are a long shot to be accepted into Surf Cup. So that leaves them with 3 lower to mid-level tourneys that anybody can enter...

Where are these better players? Certainly not on OYSA teams. Maybe a bunch of CalSouth girls relocating to Oregon?

Yeah and aren't there like 25 girls on the roster plus another 25 on the "reserves" roster. When do any of them get to play when they only have 15 games scheduled?
