Not sure it ever stops....maybe goes in and out of style. Right now it seems to be making a comeback, even EPL teams playing three in the back instead of four. There are many variations on stopper sweeper with a 3-5-2 formation.

There is always a need for one. Whether its the role of a central defender or of a defensive mid the role is there although most will look at it strictly in a 3-5-2 formation.

Best comments never stops they just change the name left back right back etc. This is a very important position. A good one can get the ball wide and deep making the midfield play higher.

You need the right players for this formation. One of the other posters brought up the EPL. Do you really think Van Gaal is succeeding defensively with this formation. He isn't. He doesn't have the players to play the system.

In a flat 4 the 2 Central Defenders will still practice the sweeper / stopper in play. But to totally go to a 3 defender system is suicide without the right players. In most youth teams 16 an above I have seen in South Florida the Central Defenders don't have the mentality or logic to play the system.

Are you even watching Man U games they haven't been playing a 3-5-2 they have been playing 4-4-2 with diamond sometimes flat 4 .... Its not about the system its about the philosophy of the coach/Trainer that's what makes or breaks a team

You're right Man U switched to a 4-4-2. However, its not about Van Gaal changing his philosophy, its because he recognized he did not have the right players to do it. Once he came to that conclusion, he changed his formation. My guess, is if he acquires/develops the right players, he'll go back to the 3-5-2.

To answer the original question, you need the right players. Like in alot of team sports, when you have great talent, alot of different formations will work

3-5-2 is a very aggressive style. You need the speed and a high level of fitness for the outside mids to be able to run it correctly. The outside mids have to drop back and play wide on the attack for it to work well. Also your the 2 outside backs need to drive the attackers wide while the outside mids fill the back line to basically create a 5 back defensive line

Many US college teams run the 3-5-2.

Huh? The position is a central position. Did you post this cause you are trying to convince yourself your kid is in "an important" position.

You are lost. Don't try so hard to sound smart.

It's a cheap way to win games. Very little coaching takes place when a team adopts the stopper sweeper system. It's lazy from the coach to rely on the fast kid at the back with a big kick - but this is America and it works unfortunately.

You can tell a good team by the way they set up defensively; are they flat, are they compact, and are they a unit?

Watch an MLS game, a Champions League game or even a BPL game, and look for a stopper sweeper system in defense ... I don't think you'll find one.

Depends on the age level and formation. At 8v8 and 11v11, two most important positions could be the center midfielder and sweeper. Or the sweeper could simply be the kid who kicks the ball really far instead of controlling the middle and setting up the counter.
