    Turf Fields and Cancer Risk

There has been a lot in the news lately on this topic. This is the second report that I have seen:

    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/investig...-risks-n222151

Kendall has mostly turf fields. What other clubs use mostly turf?

Yeah, what kind of jerk spreads the word about possible cancer risk to our children? I mean really. Anyone who even tries should get a nice a nice nasty label.

So the pesticides don't cause cancer?

amazing what people will argue about on here. Why would you get so defensive about someone posting this? This is a legitimate concern that people have the right to know about.

I, for one, have been shocked by those stories and will no longer allow my gk to play on turf. Fortunately it's not very prevalent around here. We have encountered it mostly at summer camps at colleges.

Thank you for posting this again. Uncanny many keepers are having leukemia and lymphoma. Although no one wants to say the turf is a proven significant risk factor, it seems logical that exposure to chemicals in the old crumbled rubber that have been heated in sun could cause a health risk. Ingesting crumbed rubber and having it in open wounds just can't be healthy.

They do, and also should be noted for concern; however, petroleum based products, such as, the artificial turf are fast acting carcinogens, and this is why there is so much immediate alarm with the rise in certain types of cancer and artificial turf.

The pesticides and fungicides work differently at a much slower pace. Sometimes, its the exposure to both (fungicides and pesticides) that create problems (Parkinson's, MS, Fybromyalgia, cancer, and other auto immune diseases), sometimes its the level of exposure, sometimes the carcinogens are stored in fatty cells, and may create health problems later in life.

Nothing like inhaling and digesting shredded tire on a hot sunny day in south florida.

Only thing that makes me question if the turf is the cause is football. I am sure a running back hits the turf more than a keeper. Lineman too. Is there a rise in football player cancers too?

Good point please provide research as too the rise of cancer with soccer players who play indoor or those that don't. Also let us know if cancer is more prevalent in northern athletes where turf is used more. You can also add the difference between football players, soccer players, lacrosse players, baseball players, and all the other sports that play on turf. What sport has more athletes with cancer.

While you are at it, since turf is plastic, wouldn't their be a rise in ALL athletes getting cancer since ALL athletes drink water or Gatorade from a plastic bottle.

Get back to us after you have figured this out. Thanks!!!

Is nobody questioning that it could be the rubber in goalkeepers gloves rather than the turf that all players are exposed to?

football players are more protected by their clothing. Also they have a mouthgard in so their mouths stay closed instead of ingesting it.

Actually, the plastic for drinking beverages are very different than the artificial turf that is mainly used from chopped up tires that are petroleum based, and have many other chemical compounds for tire use and longevity (not quite the same standards for a drinking container). In addition, your questions are valid about location (northern climates do not cook the petroleum based artificial turf like south Florida does which emits a toxic gas as well and changes the toxic level of the soccer pellets).

There is actually quite a bit on line from reputable sources (not hysteria as perhaps, you are implying).

Obviously, a lot of money is made from artificial turf, so the makers would want to discredit any claims or research that might make this hazardous to our children, no?
