Disclaimer....my son attended ODP tryouts and did not get selected.

What do they look for at each position...in general.

    Thank you

Each coach is different but for the most part quality players. However, due to USSDA quality has decreased so average players have a higher chance of getting picked. If your son does not know what he lacks, that is the first problem.

They have a list of players from the clubs before tryouts even occurs. Then ODP only keeps those players they know whose family will spend whatever they ask for. Of course there are exceptions but most ODP players really are not that good or are average at best.

Different poster here, my son has made it and not made it before. But each year I shake my head at some of the kids chosen. I've seen very good players not make it, yet the kid that dribbles out of play does make it. You have to wonder if kid B plays at the right club and kid A doesn't!

              Mixed Emotions

My son did not make it.

The Pool was definitely diluted this time around but there were a handful of quality kids there who could play for any team. They chose some of the usual big strong fast kids with little technical ability but they also picked up some smaller boys with a stronger overall skill set. Good balanced selections for what they had to choose from. I believe only 16 were chosen this time around also.

I know players at both DA and ODP that are very good- yes the overall tryout pool at DA might be a little higher (cause you are sort of tapped on the shoulder to try out much of the time) but if you watch the state teams or above, there are many kids if not most that could play at some level of part time/full time DA as well-

why knock any of these kids is still beyond me- and especially those who try but don't make the cut so what, they are kids trying out and no need to bash,.

98's had 40 players. Only 6 taken. No defenders only midfielders.

Most posts do not knock the kids. No names are posted. Most knocks just say the program is not what is suggests it is. That is my take on it anyway. I could care less how much someone pays to get their beauty pageant crown.

I guess you could both of odp or academy aren't exactly as advertised - yeah odp not likely to create Olympic athletes but neither is academy (in us ) creating many pros.

The ironic part is that where academy and other is programs are actually working ( to create proffesional players over many years of training ) in the soccer countries - the selection process is totally different. Ie skill and smarts first and can develop that muscle later- the opposite in the us mostly true-- strong and mature first, try to develop skill. That's cause academies and odp are just like club , want to win that trophy now, not develop potential to sell the player as a pro later. As much as academy or odp say it's about finding "potential" and developing them at the end of the day coaches put winning first in the US even for young athletes.
