Club + ODP vs ECNL Cost vs Value

Before ECNL came to the region top players U14 -16 with their eye on playing at the next level tended to play for clubs with traveling teams and currently spend $4-5,000 for the club & tournament fees AND travel. The first round of ODP varies depending upon if you were in or out of OYSA but the bulk of the better girls were in the OPL so the costs of participation in the first round was $350 plus the cost of travel to practice. If they participated in the regional tournament add in another $600-800. For the top players sent to Regional Camp add in another $400 so the total for the best players ran approximately $5,000 - 6,600.

The value of the additional training in ODP varied greatly each year with the quality of the coaching. The value of the games played in the local ODP tournament is a shadow of what is was when teams from Cali and back East would come in to provide a real measuring stick. Now the ODP teams only get meaningful competition when they go to the regional tournament.

So a top player's choices are participating on a local traveling team where the value of the games played in EITHER local league is limited to one or two other teams which means 2 or 4 games plus the 8-10 quality games they will get at the various out of state tournaments like Mustang, Vegas and for select teams Surf & OYSA Regionals.

Over the career of a top local club player from U14-U16 they would have the opportunity to play 24-30 quality club team games plus 3-6 quality OPD games for a total of 28-36 quality games for at least an average of at least $5,000 per year over those three years.

The anti ECNL crowd makes their case against ECNL as an unnecessary extra expense saying the status quo provides an equal opportunity for exposure and development and points to the historical placement of local player who were identified prior to ECNL's dominance of the recruiting process..

Dealing with just the economics and value of the current system it is instructive to actually compare cost vs. value.

Regardless of the initial success of any one team ECNL team the decision for the better top players and their parents needs to be made with all the facts clearly laid out. The costs for a U14 ECNL team will run between $6,500 and $7,000 depending upon how many summer and or other additional tournaments they decide to participate in. In their league they will have 12 games 6 of which will be against quality teams. In their one ECNL showcase they will face at least 2 quality opponents which translates to 8 quality games. They will also pay in the first round of the National play offs where they will get at least 2 more quality games. Assuming that the local teams will play 2 additional quality tournaments adding at least 4 more quality games for the U14 year for a total of 20 for the U14 season.

The U15's play 2 showcase events meaning they will play 2 more quality teams that year however they will probably only play one out of league tournament like Vegas/Surf or Mustang in addition to the first round of the national playoff. So for roughly the same $6,500 - $7,000 this group will again play 20 meaningful games.

The U16's play 3 showcase events and the National playoffs so you can swap the 2 quality games that come with a nonleague showcase for the ECNL show case however the cost of the travel to Florida & Texas and the National playoff will take the cost of participation to between $8,100 and $8,500 to get those same 20 meaningful games.

So an HONEST cost/value comparison between the status quo for a club/ODP player is at best 36 quality games for at BEST $15,000 vs. 60 quality games for at WORST $23,000. In other words strictly looking at cost the a U14-16 Club/OPD career a player is looking at spending $416 per game where as an ECNL player is looking at $383 per game. For just the COST value to be equal the ECNL costs which have ALREADY been adjusted upward by $1,500 from the ECNL club's projected budgets have to be FURTHER understated by 9% which is not supported by the experience of ECNL parents OR the cost of flights & Hotels on any booking service. I would also point out to the anti ECNL crowd that increasing travel costs affects the status quo traveling club teams too.

This seems way to logical for T/S. I think your U14 costs are on the high side however.

The U14 traveling number was in the middle of what I heard parents spent over the past couple of years. Onyx for example spent much more. The Club figure of $4,000 includes $1,500 club fees and a travel budget of $2,500 which represents 2 trips South to Cali and or Vegas and a few local or regional tournaments.

The base point however is the difference in the gross cost is a reflection of in the difference in the number of meaningful games played.

The weakness in your analysis is your assumptions about how many meaningful games you will play in each tournament. This is at best a guess. The assumption that all out of area games are meaningful is questionable.

For BOTH groups of players I "assumed" that 2 of the 3 games played at showcases and tournaments would be against quality teams. For the ECNL league calculation I did not include games against the other PDX club or Boise as quality games.

I also did not factor in any NWCL games as I do not know for sure if the ECNL or the Club teams would participate therefore I didn't include the cost OR the games in the analysis as they would cancel each other out in the analysis.

Again the point of the analysis is not to be "exact" about the dollars spent for either choice or "exact" about the number of quality games played as those numbers will vary slightly between teams and clubs but to point out the "general" costs and benefits so we can have a clear understanding of the "real" difference between the choices.

The Anti ECNL crowd would have you believe that the $5,000 difference between the Academy and the U17 & 16 ECNL is for the same number and or quality of games and nothing could be further from the truth.

I completely agree that not every player should do ECNL or would benefit from ECNL. I also agree that not every players college prospects are guaranteed to improve by participating in ECNL. Only the Anti ECNL crowd is putting those words in the mouths of the supporters!

However, saying there is no benefit to a players development and "potential" prospects from playing nearly twice as many quality games needs to be called out as ludicrous.

The anti-ECNL crowd didn't stay away because of cost alone, so all you are talking about is jibberish. At U17, FCP has a good coach but you can only make that work if you live in the right location. Practice four days a week on top of lots of honors and AP classes plus lots of travel time makes for a bad mix for some people. At CU, the jury is still out about the coach and there is a lot of people who stayed away due to his selection as coach. Also, depending upon where you live, that too is a long drive. At U16, people stayed away from CU as they didn't think they would get a fair tryout, Tom would be too biased towards his own players. Plus, many people see him as a recruiter and not that great of a coach. At FCP, good coach, but again, the travel (and for this age group, it's still mom and dad taxi to get them to practice). Combine those issues along with the costs and many people were skeptical. Sorry if you think that this is opinion, but that's the truth and why tryout numbers were mostly from the existing players and not from other teams. Add in the fact that people are skeptical about the quality of the ECNL teams. Now if you don't believe me, then you didn't do any asking around of parents at this age group and you didn't speak with parents who were at the Academy tryouts for why they were trying out for the Academy and would choose the Academy over the ECNL teams.

I agree there are many reasons each parent and player made their decisions including coaching.

However, I was not talking about the 17's OR the Academy. This was a global discussion about the VALUE decision that top U14-16 club players face.

Lastly, I would assert that if your DD couldn't handle the ECNL schedule she couldn't handle a travel team and ODP schedule either but again that is not the POINT.

I can respect your opinion. Kind of interesting people at u16 are afraid they wouldn't get a fair shake but he is also known as a recruiter? So "the recruiter" would pass on this obvious talent for a existing bench player. Sorry but you can't have it both ways. I have seen first hand talent plays the rest try to earn minutes. Recruited or not it is the way soccer should be!

It's not the total cost but cost per quality game that matters. I'm not sure where the $23,000 comes from but I doubt that's a realistic number.

Lastly, I would assert that if your DD couldn't handle the ECNL schedule she couldn't handle a travel team and ODP schedule either but again that is not the POINT.
I think that many of the ECNL players will end up struggling with the schedule. That is if they are academically inclind at all. It's going to be a struggle with if they are taking any kind of decent schedule of classes. I wonder if parents factored this in when making the committment? Remember, you get a lot more money for academics than athletics, so better not let the grades slip.

Wow thanks you so much! What would we all do if we didn't have you to point out the obvious? You really should be a advisor!

So you have no idea where the number came from yet you feel sure it's wrong.....priceless.

Go back to the first post and track the expenses outlined for each U14-16 and then you will know where it came from. If you do you can see the ECNL #'s have been adjusted upward $1,500 per year from the numbers presented by the clubs PLUS another $500 just for the skeptics'

Notice too on the CLUB + ODP side playing on a moderately traveled Club team plus ODP the number actually could actually be as high as $16,500 for a regional camp player but for the skeptics or those that say they don't spend that much for a traveling club team I rounded down $500 per year and yet you still don't get the P O I N T.

It's an analysis of comparative value not exact accounting!

One more time.....60 quality games over three years vs. 36. How much "should" you expect to pay for 24 more quality games? The dollar difference between ECNL and club plus ODP as described is $8,000 or $333 a game or roughly the same per game price as the cost of Club + OPD. Funny how that works out isn't it!

That is the projected cost of participation for THREE YEARS. $7,000 for both the 14's and the 15's and $8,500 for the 16's. Those numbers are $1,500 PER YEAR more than what the clubs presented and I tacked on another $500 just for the skeptic's.

The take away however should be the $8,000 difference for the three years AND the 24 additional QUALITY games you get for the extra $8K.
