Club names in Tampa St. Pete area

So what can one deduce from the names of the clubs in the Tampa St Pete area. We are new to the area and doing our homework. Chargers seem to cover both Tampa and St Pete. TBU covers north and south Tampa. West Florida covers both and maybe more. Then there are numerous others with names that I don't really understand that much, Dynamo, Strictly, GTBFCU, etc...

Should I read anything into the names, do they mean anything?

    Cheers

I am not sure what your question means or what answer you are looking for. It also matter if you have a boy or girl. As far as the affiliations with the names they really do not do anything for you other than you pay more to have their name on your shirt.

Only 3 clubs really matter in the are WFF, TBU and Chargers. The rest are smaller poorly run clubs.

Club matters, but sometimes the team is more important. There are excellent teams that play high levels at smaller clubs, and poor teams at big clubs. You need to do your homework to find the best fit for your child(ren)! And of course, where you live plays a part.

What age groups are you looking at, and boys/girls?

Dynamo is affiliated with MLS team of same name. They used to be called Florida Revolution. Strictly, as I was told years ago, is a reference to some long-ago political fight within another organizaton (Raiders??) and a new club formed to put the focus just on soccer. GTBFC is a hair-brained marketing scheme to misrepresent the size of the club.

Names you didn't mention: Celtic ( I know nothing about, but some poster will come on here shortly and comment on Daddy coaches and kick ball.); Hernando, West Pasco, Wesley Chapel, Dunedin, Plant City, Lutz, Largo etc. are all geographically named; VSI Pinellas used to be Everton so next year their DOC will probably sell the club name again; FC Tampa is based in the Town and Country area of Hillsborough County.

A few names that have disappeared since my kids started playing way back when: Black Watch, New Tampa Comets, Fusion, Tampa Knights (Later RSL) Zephyrhills, Hudson (new name, but I can't remember it) Central Pasco (now GTBFC), Countryside, Player's Club. HCU (now Tampa Bay United), Valrico, and I think, but not positive, Azalea, Pinellas Park and St. Pete Raiders. Also not sure if Citrus United still exhists.

Boy, this post sure stirred a trip down memory lane.

Look at got soccer, look at teams for your child's age, look at records and who played who, look up coaches, short list the level you want to be at. Top d1 usa teams continue to hold there own, bigger clubs top teams in CDL as well. You want to look at both because it's hit or miss. I'd interview parents as week during tryouts. You'll have to spend lots of time with these new people. Picking the wrong team is not just picking a club name.

              Purpose

A clubs name does not make the club alone, many things to consider. However the name is a starting point for the intent and future direction of the club. If the name is inclusive of a broad geographic area then you know the club is trying to draw from a wide area. If the name is limited to a specific town or community then the intent is to serve the residents of that community. Both are valid and serve their purpose. Chargers WFF TBU are good examples of the clubs serving a broader range of players, those clubs have more to offer in programs leagues etc... All the others fall into the later, doesn't make them bad just a different purpose

              Hope this helps

If your new to Pinellas than stay away from these clubs, they are the bottom tiered clubs: Largo, Celtic, PCU, Dunedin and Oldsmar. Really, the only four worth investing time and money into are: TBU, Strictly, Chargers and WFF.

For example, look at u15 & u16 boys. Chargers suck at u15, while TBU and WFF are pretty good, but best team is at a smaller club, GTBFC. At u16, Lutz Rangers are possibly the best team in the state, but it's a very small club. That's why you should look at teams first before club.

Keep in mind, if you go to Lutz, then your kid is going to have to play in the USA League, which is the worst league in he area.

There's the USA league basher! Get over it already... By the way, you missed the point. The Lutz u16 boys played R3PL last year, and most likely will do the same next year, if not a higher league. The point is to look at team first, then club...

the only clubs you should be considering are TBU, WFF, Chargers and Strictly! The rest of the clubs in the Tampa area are considered subpar clubs.

I would tend to agree, these clubs are the only clubs in the immediate area that have the ability for all of their club teams to play in the better leagues. Almost all the other clubs in the area are limited to a lower league with an exception of a couple of individual teams.

Only four clubs in the Tampa area have the ability to have all age groups play in advanced leagues: TBU, Strictly, Chargers and WFF. If your child is above average these are the only clubs you should consider. The bottom tier clubs are all stuck in the USA League which is a step above general rec soccer.

ps...many of the teams at your precious 'big 4' are not good, getting creamed in CDL and/or other 'higher' leagues. You can't make chicken salad from chicken crap!
