Why Ryan Dell left USWNT to become Racing Louisville’s first general manager

As the U.S. women’s national team’s manager, Ryan Dell, like all staff, spent a good deal of time monitoring the National Women’s Soccer League and tracking every player and team performance alongside his head coach.

“I can’t tell you how many times and how many nights when I’ve sat with staff in a coach’s room with Vlatko [Andonovski] in some unknown city to watch the NWSL matches,” Dell remarks with a chuckle.

That familiarity will certainly serve him well as he steps away from the international game and settles in as the first general manager of Racing Louisville. The move, which was announced Wednesday, brings to an end a lengthy search for Louisville that lasted nearly six months.

The day after he arrived in Louisville, Dell sat down with The Equalizer to discuss the new role with Racing, how a decade with the national team prepared him for this new challenge, and how he can help Louisville overcome its troubled first years as a franchise and head into a brighter future.
