Jill Ellis to lead FIFA’s technical advisory group

Former United States women’s national team head coach Jill Ellis will lead FIFA’s technical advisory group to shape the future of the sport, the world governing body announced on Sunday. Ellis will work with leaders throughout the women’s game to explore ways to improve the match calendar, global development, and competitiveness.

“I look forward to working with FIFA and bringing together the best minds in our sport. I anticipate diverse and meaningful dialogue to examine how to enhance the women’s football landscape.” Ellis said. “Potential areas of discussion will include introducing more meaningful and regular competition at all levels globally, optimizing youth development structures, and improving coaching and education standards within the game. However, it is not an exhaustive list; everything is on the table.”

Ellis is the only woman to win two World Cup titles as a coach, guiding the U.S. to the summit in 2015 and 2019. She is the president of the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League expansion team in San Diego.

Ellis said on Sunday that this is a continuation of conversations which she and FIFA president Gianni Infantino have had since the 2019 World Cup.

“It is an exciting time for women’s football which grows from strength to strength, but it is vital that we do not stand still.” Infantino said. “Jill’s experience and expertise, combined with her forward-looking mindset makes her the perfect candidate to explore and lead the way forward to ensure this positive trajectory continues.”
