They did better than expected considering they only just qualified for the WC in the easiest group to qualify in.

Bad coaching. Not playing your best creative midfielder in Reyna.
defending was horrible. Center backs not picking up open men in the box. Playing Pulisic in the left flank. So your best player can’t get enough of the ball. Need a real coach and finding an Elite striker.

The biggest embarrassment at the wc so far has been the wardrobe and hygiene of the US coach. Running around with 5 o'clock shadow and ratty t-shirts while on the biggest stage is a total embarrassment. Australia lost but when they interviewed the coach after the game, he had on a nice shirt and blazer. Time to put in a dress code for the US coaches.

This isn't a USSF failure other than to say that the current youth soccer structure, along with our professional league, hasn't led itself to helping create the level of player needed to get beyond the round of 16.
Overall, this team performed adequately and going out where they did, against the Dutch was a respectable showing considering I don't think we have a single player good enough to make the Dutch squad.
But to me the issue is a true #9 - we haven't had one since Dempsey. We have a decent back line (except Robinson was horrible against the Dutch and Dest didn't play well). Ream was probably our best player of the tournament and that's not good since he's a CB. Turner was adequate. Our issue is that every other player is a wing (Weah) or midfield player (Pulisic can't hack the physicality of the front and Reyna/Ferreria and Aaronson and Sargent just aren't #9s).
So what to do: 1. The youth structure much change and focus on the amateur clubs getting players to the pros (not college) and the pros need to give compensation to the amateur clubs so our pay to play model changes and we get better athletes the better training and invert our player pyramid. This must be a top down push from USSF as the clubs won't/can't do it. 2. We need stop counting assists and talking about 'great passing' at the younger ages - we must reward the individual attacking player and let them attack, play free and creative - that is our missing element.

Totally agree but parents who know nothing about soccer and pay the fees would want their kid to be the scorer - even if the kid can’t - a 9 is born not made - good luck convincing a clueless soccer parent that ..,
