    Haverford Men's Soccer

What's up with the change in leadership at Haverford College?

In typical D3 fashion there's no announcement on the program's web site, but there is a listing on the NCAA's Jobs Market.

Not sure what you want but that team had 4 wins last year. Usually double digits.

Just wondering whether it's a decent enough situation to encourage a friend to apply.

It's only under the previous HC, Shane Rineer, that they consistently had years with double digit wins. Other than during his tenure the results have been pretty middling.

It's a good school academically so that has a certain draw to it. For a D3 coach it's a top conference with NESCAC and UAA. School likes to win and conference puts 4 to 5 teams into NCAA each year. It's not a high pressure win at all cost environment.
Bad parts are it's tough to get in to and not a huge endowment, so its expensive. Facilities are better than average for D3 but not stellar. It also has JHU in their conference as the perennial powerhouse, the extra covid year is going away so that will help even grad students out a bit.
It's a great opportunity for a coach to make a name for themselves without tremendous pressure.

Zach Ward, the HC, recently resigned in what seems to be a termination dressed up as a "mutual departing of the ways." The word was that he was in over his head once his predecessor's players graduated. Haverford just named Kevin Brenner, an assistant at D1 LaSalle College (and formerly head coach at DIII Eastern University) as interim head coach and he's been running spring practices. He's a pretty impressive guy and I could see him turning things around to some extent if he gets the permanent job. He's already fully involved in recruiting, which suggests the interim tag might be a formality while they go through the appointments process.

Haverford dropped the interim label and named him the head coach for men's soccer. I expect he will turn them around fairly quickly. He's done it every place he's gone.

LOL. Not Kevin. Do you disagree with the opinion part at the end? I don't know him personally, but his teams have done pretty well everywhere he's gone. Red flag is that he has moved a lot. Do you know why that is? Is there something that should concern a potential recruit?

Yes it should...maybe. It could be for behind the scene reasons with just bad timing. Or, he could be a jerk and gets canned everywhere he goes. It could be purely for career advancement if, as you said, he's been successful elsewhere. That Ambitious coaches are also looking out for that next rung on the coaching ladder.

Focus on academics first with a large pool of targets, then find a good soccer fit amongst those school targets. Coaches can and do leave and other things can happen like chronic injuries, no playing time, burnout. Love the school in case something happens to your sport.

Thanks. The move from Eastern HC (where they were ranked 17th in the nation at one point) to D1 LaSalle AC might be career advancement, although I think that Eastern was trying to convert the team into an admissions pipeline because they had him set up a JV team during his tenure and he had to increase the overall roster to 50, which is a huge burden (and can force you to mislead a lot of recruits). Plus, Covid probably led to some financial cuts. Not sure about the move from LaSalle to Haverford after one year (and one year before at Delaware), but ACs don't get paid that much and there's probably more stability at a place like Haverford.

Good advice on the general approach. That's the attractiveness of a school like Haverford that has a strong academic rep.

You are obviously him or closely tied as no one has ever heard of a JV D3 soccer team. If you are him, please stop. If you are posting on his behalf, please stop. If you are a parent or player who has ever been told of a D3 JV team, please stop!! There is no such thing. There are very few D1 JV teams and they are not even labeled as such.

what are you talking about? They might be called reserve teams, but they absolutely exist in D3. There’s a whole thread about them on the men’s soccer section of the D3boards

Agreed the poster knows waaaaay too much about the coach. That doesn't mean it's him but more likely he's obsessing about his kid's recruiting process. His kid needs to be doing the research on what's a good academic and soccer fit, the coaching staff etc. Parents are there to advise and discuss, do practice interviews, get them to ID events and tours. They should never ever ever write emails. Coaches smell it a mile away.

And yeah, always academics first. Create a BIG list of targets then see if you can play soccer there.

Every program D1,D2,D3, has jv teams. Top 15 are varsity, bottom 15 are jv.
