    ECRL vs USYS

Which one is more competitive or will develop a child more?

    #2
Top USYS will have better players/athletes but most do others sports and you only practice twice per week. You can supplement with privates or small group training. But as they get older even the top USYS teams fall apart.
ECRL usually has better club structure but the players aren't as good so you aren't pushed as much. The players are usually soccer only and more dedicated but not as talented.

If you can do the privates and other stuff I would go with USYS and ride it until it falls apart. Regardless of coach, club, facilities- nothing makes a player better than playing with and against better players. You need that challenge.

The coach. Doesn't matter which league you are in if you have a bad coach

Yes, although level of competition matters some as well. As leagues ECNL>GAL>ECLR + any others. Really the C leagues are more or less a wash from a competitive standpoint.

Across all of it the quality of coaching varies widely club to club, location to location. Chose the best coaching in your area

Thanks for the responses! Very helpful. How is the travel (frequency and distance) for ECRL vs USYS? We are not trying to break the bank. Our ultimate goal is high school play, not really college.

ECRL is the same schedule every year. Home and away to: PDA B, PDA W, PDA S, MatchFit, PF, Delco, Hex, Bethesda, MD. All within 2hrs of Philly. USYS depends on the teams in your division- but mostly within 1.5 hrs.
I think most RLs do one showcase. USYS can do more than ECNL teams or nothing- depends if they are in the PRO league and make it to Nationals..

Just go to FC Delco or Penn Fusion. They'll have both RL and USYS teams.

Agree, much better than ECRL or USYS.

’Not trying to break the bank + goal of playing in high school, not really college.’

I don’t know anything about your player or your definition of ‘breaking the bank’ but generally speaking, USYS seems like a better option based on your goals.

Both leagues are competitive & can be great places to develop & put in position to play HS ball. Way too many factors to pick one as a clearly superior option.

I leaned towards USYS because of your ‘break the bank’ comment. ECRL programs are normally connected to larger programs that come with much higher club, team, coaching, & travel costs. At high school age, clubs will start traveling to showcase tournaments with hopes of getting noticed by college coaches. This often requires flights, several nights in hotels, food expenses, etc. which are all paid for by mom & dad. It’s all depends on your kids goals & what parents are willing/able to pay….

Depends what conference you are in for ECRL.

stick with USYS if she plans to only play HS soccer.
