    Field Conditions

Is it better to play on turf or grass field for players?

Grass is much better for injury prevention, but obviously artificial turf is great as you don't have to worry about rain outs or bad field conditions in general.

      Great grass > Field Turf
      Field Turf > bad grass
      Bad grass = dirt

I have seen grass fields that were not cut properly. Kids cleats disappeared in the tall grass. Ball would not move through it. Like running in sand.

Grass is great but field condition has to be great too (no divits or holes or lumps). Turf easier to maintain but not forgiving when you fall.

PF is converting one of the fields at Delacy to Bermuda grass, it looks awesome.

How does PF have so much more money than Delco? They seem to have endless grass fields, took over half of USTC plus have that nice field on 202.

It's not bermuda. They've tried that before and it didn't work as PA needs cool season grass. It'll be a mix of Kentucky bluegrass & perenial rye.

Got you, the grass looks very light green.

I think Hockessin FC has a couple fields with Bermuda. Somehow they are able to manage cool season and Bermuda.

Lighter in color cos it's new. Should darken a bit once it thickens up next spring.

PF tried bermuda at Thornbury a few years back but didn't grow back in well and they binned it. Probably due to how wet those fields can get due to their location.

The TSP with regular grass is still better than most of the grass fields in the area.

Does Bermuda grass attracts flies or bugs? I was eaten alive at my kid's game on one of the Hockessin bermuda grass fields.

Grass is preferred but growing a quality grass field that can take the abuse, as well as giving it lengthy rest periods, isn't easy to do. Field space/time is often limited, especially in the spring with LAX going. By the end of the season the fields are wrecke, but the hot dry summer isn't a good time to try and re-vitalize. Feilds should be taken off long for an entire winter+ spring or fall+winter. Good luck with that plan just about anywhere
