Is this usually how it works? Just trying to educate myself... Thanks!
It is required to be part of ODP for the 21-22 year but Interregional team is selected prior to tryouts, so when asked to be part of the interregional they ask you to verbally commit to tryout/be part of ODP for the following year.

Congratulations to all who made the teams and player pool.

But it is also very weird when looking at the list. For 2009 Boys 3 boys listed on the Team and 5 boys listed on the Player Pool were not in the original released list of NJ boys making up the East Region Pool. We only had 12 2009 NJ boys at the East Region Camp and 11 of those were put onto the released Regional Pool list, so where did the other 8 NJ boys come from?

The lists are combined boys and girls, threw me for a second as well.

Ahhh, LOL OK, I reread the top part of the article now as well, where they clearly state the New Jersey boys and girls. Thank you for pointing that out, makes me feel better now.

Most of ODP is crap in NY and NJ state. Most talented players don’t even try out due to not having the time. We knew a couple of players and knew it wasn’t anything special with some of the players they took, it was obviously just to get bodies. I wouldn’t even consider it until u14 and above.

Not true at all. Team at U14 and up are top players in state. Over 1500 girls tried out. If your kid made the team they are objectively identified as top players in state. Plus it goes a long way of applying to private HS and or for college resumes.

I have to agree with OP. Really good solid talent. ECNL, GA and Top USYS all represented. The talent is chosen by 20
different coaches over multiple tryouts with over 300 per age. It’s hard to argue. Maybe some players didn’t show up that are also good or maybe they did and didn’t get chosen. It happens every year that some of the players you would think would be immediately identified are just not. It’s a Good wake up call that not all the top talent plays at one club or for one organization. Talent changes every year as they grow.

NJ State youth soccer team is a privilege. It’s not for everyone. Many top players simply can’t make the team. It’s not for everyone.

Most with knowledge into how the leagues work will agree, ODP is not what it was. Back in the day, it was the place to be. It mattered on your soccer resume. While that is not necessarily the case, It is still very good and a privilege. To make any selection team is a privilege.

If you kid made it and likes it, that is all that matters. Getting additional training is never a bad thing. Best of luck to the teams.

There is no other opportunity like this for players in our state. What it is and what is is now is the same. If there were another identification opportunity in our state that attracted thousands of girls we would do that instead. But doesn’t seem there is one? Or is there another unbiased tryout in our state that we are unaware of?

Yes. Sure. Back in the day. Whatever that means. Reality is that at present time NJ has a strong ODP team. Good luck to all in the upcoming season.

Back in the day, means at least 5-6 yrs ago any and every quality player went out for ODP. You were identified by premier college soccer programs and national team trainings by and through ODP. It is not the case any longer.

As a result, many top level kids do not go out for it. With the multiple leagues and the quality of play and PDP programs within, ODP isn't needed.

Not the case says the skeptics. Reality is the soccer opportunities today in NJ are much greater then they were 5-6 years ago.
