    Future of College Soccer

With the shutdown of soccer program in Cincinnati how likely are other colleges to shutter their programs because of funding reasons? Most colleges including D1 are losing lots of money on soccer and I can imagine these programs are going to be the first to go.

Does club soccer even make sense if there is no college soccer?

Universities aren't giving refunds to their students are they?

Why do they have to make cuts?

Do professors bring in student athletes like coaches do?

On the Bearcats cutting the men's program:

women's program was has not been dropped

The men's soccer program had $907,745 in total operating expenses in the fiscal year 2019 and $181,247 in total operating revenues while distributing 9.66 scholarships. Students will keep their scholarships. - (no women's figures provided)

AD Cunningham:"The coronavirus kind of allowed me to take a step back and look at the entire picture of our athletics department and what we could manage in terms of the number of student-athletes that we support. When I did that, it became clear to me that this was a difficult move, but the right move." Cin. Inquirer

UC began its men's soccer program in 1973 and had an all-time record of 385-408-84 with NCAA Tournament appearances in 1998, 2003 and 2006.

The Bearcats had a 5-11-1 record last season and longtime coach Hylton Dayes resigned on March 13.

Seems like the Pandemic, a large gap in cost vs revenue and no head coach/advocate hurt the program. Also, the MLS' FC Cincinatti academy may now be a competitor pathway for southern Ohio and Kentucky players. These factors could have led to the decision to discontinue.

With 20% unemployment- how are universities managing budgets. Will the students show up? My guess the first cut would be to sports and arts. For D1 programs this would be significant savings.

First of all, college tuition is highway robbery. How about school presidents take a pay cut first before the little people?

I’m sure they will take a cut and cancel non-revenue sports programs.

Women’s sports, on average, have a deficit of $14M for D1 colleges.

Betsy Devos is probably working hard on how to get rid of title IX on behalf of hard working taxpayers! D3 would be in the same hole, the overhead of staff and facilities is significant.

Forbes is pretty much spelling out that women’s college soccer is probably following in the footsteps of GDA.

Without college soccer - what exactly is the purpose of ECNL?

This is why ecnl people high fiving over the death of gda is insane. The entire sport is headed for a 20 year step backwards right now and we should be scared of any and every program that shuts down, from ayso to DA to college. Who wants to be able to tell people their kid is the best player of a sport that barely exists anymore?

Spot on - women’s soccer could end up being another victim of the #coronavirus.

The high price status league will have no point if there are no college scholarships available. The writing is on the wall or ball!

Women’s college soccer would end up a victim of this virus? No college scholarships available with the writing on the wall? Aren’t we being a little dramatic? Is anyone on this board familiar with Title 9? Does anyone know what the ramifications of this has been to female athletes and women’s sports in college? As long as there are collegiate sports there will always be Title 9 to protect Female college student/athletes. Now go look it up. As far as scholarships this idea of getting full rides at great schools are a myth not a reality. You want full scholarships then take up rowing or some other sport that colleges need to fill teams with.

That’s what everyone thought. Then Betsy Devos came to align USA interests with Trumps.

He hand picked her precisely to do away with not only Title 9, but destroy public education altogether. Everything will be privatized so he and his billionaire buddies can make more billions. Get ready. It’s happening every day while we’re all distracted by watching all the arguments going on about the virus. Never forget the evil genius who is pulling the puppet strings.
