The Womens European Cup is starting this week and they are expecting record numbers of people at the stadiums in England as well as for the first time ESPN is televising every match. The American audience is expected to have record numbers viewing as well. In major cities across this country viewership for womens & mens soccer is rising each year. That’s a fact you can look up with no dispute.
International soccer and Pro Club soccer are different. Getting crowds for Euros, WC is not the concern. Can the USA continue to have a great national team with the College/NWSL being the primary provider? Part of the attraction to the US team is familiar names and winning.

Really, on the mens side the majority of players on the team play in Europe and those players are quit familiar to those who are fans of soccer. This National team has players who play champions league as well as European cups. The popularity of soccer on the mens/woens side just continue to grow. Can you say the same for American sport other than basketball and American football? All the top international teams will be here in the states in the next week to play matches.

Agreed although it’s always a dead end argument to talk about soccer in Europe (or anywhere else) vs soccer in America, or to compare soccer in America to other American sports. It’s apples and oranges.

We should be happy after some failed earlier leagues that womens pro soccer in America is gaining momentum. Two new NWSL teams this year and two more within a couple years will bring more opportunities for players. It’s important to have a pathway for the most talent players to go pro.

The “other reasons” are worrh exploring. Will the teams emphasis on platform messaging turn out to be a net gain or loss in popularity?

Top 5 growing sports in USA
            1) E Sports
            2) Pickleball
            3) Adventure Racing
            4) MMA
            5) Lacrosse

The USMNT seemed to peak around 2006.
            The 2018 team flubbed
The 2022 team averages 23 years in age and stumbled into the last qualifying slot on GD with a loss to Costa Rica on the last day. Not exactly powering their way in as the last member of a weak North American delegation. I suppose one can hope they will improve with age, although the breeding ground seems to be Europe more than the MLS, College, or DA.
The NWSL is surviving and yes even growing a bit, although the WNT is over the hill and in dire need of updating its style of play and youthfulness to match the emerging European squads.

Sports is not a zero sum game. Just because someone likes pickle ball or MMA doesn’t mean they don’t like or won’t spend money on soccer. Demographically, soccer is in a sweet spot and is growing.

I don’t think anyone who follows the USMNT thinks they will win a World Cup, but the product on the field is much better than in the past. That is saying something when you consider that every country has also continuously improved their squads. Many American men are now playing in the top leagues in Europe compared to even a few years ago so the DA/MLS pathway seem to be working. Right now, Europe is the destination for top players from around the world and that’s due to the history, coaching, and infrastructure that’s there. They have at least a 50 year head start over other countries. But even the rosters of many “European” teams have more Americans, Africans, South Americans, and Asians than ethnic Europeans.

And seriously, have you watched any recent USWNT games?! I wouldn’t describe the young team that they’ve put together for the 2023 WC qualifiers as “over the hill”. If anything, I’d say it’s some of the European squads that are more reliant on 30+ year old players than the USWNT. There is a LOT more depth on the USWNT roster.

People have watched the WNT because they won. The true fans will stick around but the team had millions of viewers who liked seeing team USA dominate. having the WC here in a few years will cause a resurgence, like it did before, but in terms of attention for the average American, the top 3 sports will continue to dominate

Only fossils are most TS posters. TS is for talking sh-t rather than soccer.

How does it work? Do the kiddie clubs pay guys in nursing homes to create threads off scripts and go on and on about the same tired and outdated nonsense for click bait?

The USSF are heavily involved in the economics of the decision to play in NWSL. At some point, the supply of players needs to be better than those developed elsewhere or the margin will reduce. The succes curve of the WNT seems to match that of UNC. Still a great team, but competition and the growth of international talent dev/ id has made them far less dominant. Same thing is happening in the women's game internationally, but at a much slower pace because a professional development model relies on club funding - fewer players with elite potential vs a pay to play model based around Title IX College soccer relient on parent funding - far more players of varying abilities.

The USSF are hoping the energy comes from selling you a new group of "generational" players with interesting backstories when they win.

Now that the warm up games are wrapping up, Rapinoe and Morgan are set to join BS, KO, KM, and perhaps CD along with either GK on our over 30 club.I assume Rapinoe has joined the team for her mouth, not her feet, as she has played little recently. Without the Orange guy as a foil, she can take aim at the SCOTUS to body slam the nation she plays for. Can't wait!

Great response, well said. I work in sports media and everyone is eager to see the overall ratings for the women’s European championships that are beginning this week. They have sold a record number of tickets for all the matches. In addition, for the first time ESPN will be televising every match. They never would have made this type of commitment without the research showing that viewership and interest will be a record high. Your comparisons to pickle ball and other like sports is insulting and gives you no credibility.

The pickle ball comment is in response to the previous post of the 5 growing sports in comparison to soccer.

With college football shifting rapidly (see UCLA, USC to Big Ten) the ACC is next to implode. Clemson, FSU, maybe Louisville, Miami are soon to depart (maybe SEC?). Where will that leave the likes of BC and Cuse? ACC is about to look like the Big East with crappy football. The trickle down affect will be significant

Let’s not jump the shark yet. A lot is dependent on what Norte Dame decides to do regarding football. SEC could care less about Miami or Louisville. They would rather add UNC to bolster SEC Basketball but they know they would also have to add Duke because they are a package deal like UCLA/USC.
