    NIL Impact on College Sports

Good piece thats worth a read. While I agree college athletes should get compensation for playing, the NIL system that's rapidly developing may have a negative impact in the long run. Funds that used to go to teams and athletic departments move to individual athletes, which in turn means less money for non revenue teams (like soccer). There already has been a number of no revenue teams cut and it may get worse. Smaller schools with less visibility won't be able to complete for talent against higher exposure teams. Almost of these deals for serious $ are men's basketball and football players. And don't think your soccer stud at a mid tier Patriot program will make anything. The piece has an example of a field hockey player that gets deals for free meals from a local restaurantamd some free equipment.

The irony of your statement about the soccer stud (and probably almost all athletes) at the mid tier Patriot program not making anything from NIL is that it also means that NIL won't have much effect on the funding of their athletic departments and teams because sponsors will get much more bang for their buck from sponsoring the team/school than a few individual athletes who have pretty small followings compared to the institution as a whole and alumni are more interested in donating to the team than individual recruits they don't know much about. The non-revenue sports that are in danger from NIL tend to be the ones at Power 5 conferences where the revenues of football and basketball has basically been subsidizing the rest of the athletic department and NIL Collectives are already starting to soak up a lot of that money.

There are threats to the funding of college sports, but those either pre-dated NIL or will be if colleges are ordered or pay players or big conferences break off from the NCAA altogether.
