    College soccer "consultants"

Any thoughts on the proliferation of "consultants" charging fees in order to assist players (mostly boys) in getting recruited into college soccer programs?

No, no, no!!!! The only people that hire them are kids who struggle to get recruited to low ranked d3 programs. 100% not necessary!!!

I guess it depends on the services they offer. Do they put together highlight reels or help you do school research? People that hire them are not only people going to d3 schools. It's a popular service, but obviously you have to do your research as there are some phonies out there that charged ridiculous amounts of money.

Unless you like setting your cash on fire.

Besides if your son isn't vested in the process and willing to put the time in to it then he's not going to last in college sports. Kids need to own it, its their path.

Sounds like a typical scam trying to take advantage of parents who are paranoid of the college application process

And there's plenty of others out there for non athletes also, with test prep, consulting where to apply and how, even essay writing. Varsity Blues' mastermind Singer saw a ripe opportunity. Not all operations are scams, plenty aren't, but few give you much considering what you're paying. Hard working HS kids can figure this stuff out with a little help from parents, guidance counselors and coaches.

I can see what they make money. For kids who’s phones don’t ring, you need to do some legwork. It’s a lot of time and effort.

I enjoyed it with her but am fortunate I had the time and some basic understanding (albeit aged and not terribly useful today). For some, it’s the perfect tonic of just paying someone to make it happen.

No idea who actually followed through with one of these. We had one phone conversation and found the guy 100% full of shyte

The biggest scam are the clubs that say they offer all this college support up charge the tuition and its nothing but crickets.
We got 100xs the support and information from working with someone. It's affordable, informative and provides a plan.

And agree, many clubs promise the moon too and fail to deliver.

Exactly. Rely on those you already know and know you too. Then go outside the circle to a recommended source.

An alternative to the private college consultant, are the larger recruiting outfits such as NCSA. We've actually had a very good experience with them. If the player is busy and doesn't have time to organize all of the emails and research involved, NCSA streamlines the process and makes it quite manageable. There are different levels of one on one consulting but for the most part it is player driven. I just find it a useful organizational tool, in terms of what schools are targeted, who to contact, what steps to take and when. Not saying it can't be done on your own, but it just keeps things better organized than we could do otherwise.

That is the job of your future student athlete. Yes I know kids are super busy but if they can't organize this process then good luck to them in college as a student athlete.

Any reasonably sized club should be providing consulting hours once/twice per year to the team as a whole and allow for each player to have 3-4 sessions a year with this person. The player can and should drive the process with someone to check in with, not to hold their hand and do it for them.

Speak to any D1 coach and they will tell you emails from outfits like NCSA, BeRecruited, etc. get deleted.

Well to do parents don't have time to parent, let alone contribute to a college commitment plan. That's why consultants make a lot of money.

Keeping in constant contact with 30 schools is hard. Maintaining a list of current coach emails is even harder over the 3 year window of recruiting.

It takes a lot of busy work to get to the finish line.
