    Girls Academy League VS ECNL?

    Which path to choose?

    #2
So many variables. On the whole ECNL is “better”. More of the better players and less of the weaker. Reality is for ~70% of the players you can toss them in a hat and you’d see no change. However cost, training, location, etc. are factors to consider.

We’re happy where we are and the route provides her with several D1 (and some D3) options. But truthfully if things were apples to apples not sure we wouldn’t have chosen another path.

      - If your daughter wants to play HS ball, GA isn't an option
      - Not sure about GA, but ECNL showcases get tons of college coaches and if she's on a decent team, will get a lot of exposure
      - ECNL isn't cheap. Not sure if GA is subsidized like the boys

You definitely can play HS soccer if your in GA. Many do.

Wasn't that the whole deal with the GA trying to take the place of DA after it folded, that they WOULD follow the ECNL and allow high school play (instead of being like the DA and not allowing it)?

They had no choice. They were losing too many players to ECNL, not just because of HS but that wasn't helping. If ECNL can still offer good competition and help get you recruited then you don't need to give up HS if you want. Most GAL clubs players do HD last fall so there wasn't much of a season anyway.

Not at every club but now at most so then there's not enough players and teams to have a season.

GA in the Northeast conference follows same scheduling as everyone else, allowing for HS play. It is a decent league but there is no question it is well behind the ECNL, although CT ECNL includes FSA, who are awful. There are some one-off good GA teams but depending on where you are in CT the options are Oakwood or NYSC.

Find a coach you like. Watch the older teams play and see what style you like the best. In the end, it's not going to be the league that has an impact on your player, it will be the coaches and the other families.

How can the league be left out? A team is only as good as it is when faced with various levels of competition. So team environment changes based on who they are playing. A "great" NPL team is going to have lots of fun and score goals but if they play a GA team they get smashed, it sucks and the same group of kids is now unhappy.

This. And which club can you get to in <30 minutes for an evening practice. In the end, they’re both fine.

Team environment is such a big factor. The best league and the greatest club can be ruined by a bunch of overly involved, nasty kids and particularly parents. As much as you should watch the team and the coach practice and play, look out for how the parents act on the sidelines as well.

Thats why it's good to go to games - you can watch both the coach and parents, walk the sidelines and try and catch conversations. They'll just think you're with the other team. But don't base a decision solely on that. We've had some awful parents on different teams but the experince and coaching was good for my kids and that's what mattered.

First, there's a lot of NPL and GAL overlap and they wouldn't be playing each other often anyway. Not sure what point you're making there. Bigger picture loses are part of the deal. Even blowouts have lessons learned. A team doesn't have to win every game but hopefully have close, competitive matches. A season of blowouts is time to question the league fit.
